with a Jamboree tonight at the
Roseburg High School gym.
Twelve teams, representing six
of the county's Northern Div ision
and six of the Southern Division,
will vie for the leading pre-season
dividing circuit.
The games will consist of two
sixinlnu:e halves with a yell con
test slaled for midway in the
evening's hoop tournament be
tween student bodies o'f the 12
schools.
A capacity crowd Is expected
and reports art that each
school's student body is out to
win the coveted yell contest tro
phy, as well as support their re
spective quintets with all their
lungs.
Orner J. Monger, local Rose
burg principal, Friday advised
local fans to attend tne noop pro
gram early as sections are to be
set aside for each of the vying
student bodies' pep rally.
Myrtle Creek Favored
Myrtle Creek, defending 1945
county champions, will enter the
competition decided favorities
over Drain, while other teams
will be fairly evenly matched in
the six twelve-minute previews
of this year's B League casaba
crop.
The Blue and Gold Myrtle
Creek Vikings, coached this year
by Forrest C. Loghry, have four
returnine lettermen this year and
have already knocked over Rose
burg's Indians 23-21 although fall
ing to the Redskins in the return
match, 30-l!l. Slated for action to
nicht are Hanna, Weeks, Shirt-
cliff, Wilson and Bowen.
The Drain five are not to be shut
off against Myrtle Creek, how
ever, as they have also had pre

on height, they expect to give to
night's upposing Glide team some
real competition.
Elkton Has Tall Trio
Three senior lettermen form
the nucleus of the Elkton Red
and White cagers, who go aaginst
Camas Valley tonight. Coach Carl
M. (irimsrud Is also honored this
year with a pick of six of last
year's returners, three of whom
measure more than six feet in
height. Probable lineup for the
Elks Include Kesterson, Courley,
Smith, Jackson, Colley. Clemo
and Binder.
Not expected to possess the
strength of last year's club, the
Wolves of Coach L. R. Hanson's
Days Creek squad possess three
returners. Although slow in de
veloping this year, Hanson states
that squad competition for start
ing berths has been at its peak.
Slated for probable action are
Bratten, Smith, Snyder, Duncan,
Moore, Deatherage, Lortie and L.
Moore.
The division winning tonight's
Jamboree will be determined by
the division tallying the most
points during the six contests.
Police Cooperate
In Effort to Cut
Traffic Tragedies
Chief of Police Erwln Short to
day announced his department Is
cooperating with the office of
Secretary ol State Farrell in con
ducting a concerted drive against
Christmas holiday accidents dur
ing the latter part of December.
"Since moving traffic violations
play an important part in many
of these holiday accidents, this
department plans to keep a sharp
eye on motor vehicle operators In
an effort to discourage these
costly violations," Short declared.
The chief listed these violations
as major factors in most uroan
traffic accidents during the holi
day season:
1. Failure to observe stop signs
and traffic signals.
2. Failure to yield right of way
to other drivers or to pedestrians
in crosswalks.
3. Speed too great for condi
tions. 4. Making turns fro'n Improper
lanes.
5. Failure to give adequate sig
nals for starting, stopping, and
turning.
Short urged motorists to ob
serve traffic regulations as their
part of the campaign to reduce
the tragic annual Christmas holi
day toll.
"During the past six years,
traffic accident occurring dur
ing the final ten days of Decem
ber have taken a total of 63 lives
in this state," the chief said.
"This year drive and walk care

Objectives Of
Boy Scouts For
Coming Year Set
A planning conference of the
Oregon Trail Council, Boy Scouts
of America, was held Sunday last
in r.ugene, at wnicn lime mem
bership, health and safety, and
leadership training objectives
were set for the year 1947.
The training committee, under
the leadership of Council Presi
dent J. R. Bruckart and Field
Executive Harold J. Shearer, de
veloped plans for conducting
scout leadership courses in each
of the districts of the council
within the first quarter of 1947.
These courses are to include lead
ership training opportunities in
all phases of scouting, cub scout
ing, boy scouting and senior
scouting.
The organization and extension
committee under the direction of
Dr. C. H. Michel, noted member
ship status as of November 30 in
cluding a grand total of 4351
members In the 123 units of the
Oregon Trail Council. Objectives
approved Included a minimum
grand total membership of 4733
in 140 units with soecial emphasis
being given to the senior pro
pram for young men in the 15 to
18 age bracket.
Dr. EX D. Furrer Indicated the
health and safety group is again
planning for Inspection of every
meeting place within the council;
examination of all scouts partici
pating in long-term camps and
oeneral emphasis on the advance
ment program, particularly those
relating to first aid and gaiety.
General inspection of camps will
be made as heretofore.
