FOOTBALL LESSONS

The Lions Club held its annual banquet for the Roseburg
High. School football teamThursday night. Each year, fol
lowing the close of; the football season, the Lions Club pre.
pares a banquet to which; it invite tha member of; the
squad,, fathers and various guests. Ib always is an enjoyable
occasion and is a tribute the player well deserve.
." As a feature of the banquet, trophies were awarded' to
players voted to be outstanding in the several departments
of play.
Xhis practice of. voting all-star teams, selecting players
for special honors, etc., is doubtless an essential part of the
follow-up in athletic competition, because of inspirational
effect. It is only human nature to work a little harder, give
a littlo more energy, . f-'ght a little more, if. that effort will
win recognition, honor and reward. Such prizes and acco
lades are indeed merited, but too often we place emphasis
upon individuality rathor than teamwork.
The man, who carries the ball gets his name in headlines
but quite frequently the fellow who opened the hole for the
ball' carrior gets his name only in the small type of the
summary. .
Usually, when you see a sensational gain in football, it
results, not so much from the ability of the ball carrier, but
rather, from the fact that his teammates efficiently executed
their blocking assignments and thus cleared the path for
his gain,.
When a football, team goes as far as did the Roseburg
Indians in the past season it is because the men composing
that squad worked as a TEAM. Naturally, some players have
better coordination, greater strength, superior timing,. more
competitive spirit, than others. They are the players who re
ceive special awards and honorable mention, But even with
theip physical advantages they
were it not for teamwork.
There is a nasty little rumor
that, the reason for Army's

Cola scholarship test to be given
in February. These tests are open
to all seniors in the United State.

preliminary 32-17;
Both contests were coaching

Loghry. emoloying a slower but
similar attack cased around
screening plays and coordinated
blocks.
Newby and Loghry, both' serv
