James Miller of
Roseburg Passes

dent for the past 26 years, died
yesterday, after a short illness,
at Mercy hospital. He was en
gaged here in the contracting
business.
Mr. Miller was born August 1,
18K7. in Dundee. Scotland, i-oming
directly to Roseburg from his na
tive land, tie was a memnrr oi
me Masonic I-odge, the Shrine,
Knights of lthias and the Eagles
Ixxlge.
Mr. Miller's wife diet! in 1941.
They are survived by three sons.
William J., Leslie, and wen n.
Miller, all of Roseburg. Also sur
viving is Mrs. Miller's mother,
Mrs. Janet Cowan, who made
her home with the family for the
past 3; vears.
Mr. Miller also has one broth'T
and two sisters residing In Scot
land, and one sister residing in
New Zealand.
Services will be held in the
chapel of the Long and Orr Mor
tuary Saturday, November 23. at
2 P. M. Interment will follow in
the Masonic cemetery, under aus
pices of the Masonic Idge.

Total state revenues from dog
and horse racing bets in 1946
was 5513.117. the largest return
on recird. The figure compares
with $398,755 in 1945, and $346,
836 in 1944. It is 41 times as
great as in 1939.
A big reason for the large In
crease was the opening of the
Portland Meadows horse racing
track in Portland.
Counties got $351,200 of the
total, or $9,755 for each county.
There was $213,200 distributed to
the counties today and the re
mainder last August. These funds
are used for county fairs.
Distribution was made also to
the Pacific International Live
stock Show, Oregon Stale Fair,
Pendleton Round up and Eastern
Oregon Livestock Show, as well
as lo the Northwestern Turkey
Show.
