Consolidation of
Three Holidays

the belief of commanders of the
four veterans organizations of
Rosebnrg.
The four leaders, representing
the United Veterans of the Spanish-American
War, Disabled
American Veterans, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, and the American
f.cgion, all pointed out in the im
promptu survey that their opin
ions were their own and did not
necessarily reflect the opinion of
their groups.
Harrison R. Winston, com
mander of Patrick Kellv Post,
No. 24tl8, of the V. F. W., pro
posed the elimination of Armi
stice Day and Victory davs In fa
vor of a single day to be titled
"Freedom Day." to mark the end
ing of all wars engaged In the
cause of freedom by the United
States.
Would Delete 'Victory'
"Such a designation," he said,
"would tend to promote better in
ternational feeling than our cele
brating victories over defeated
enemies. I believe we should
eliminate the word victory alto
gether in the observances, and
combine them into one single day
of observance, preferablv in Au
gust on the present V-J Day
dale, doing away with the coin
ciding of so many holidays."
Also supporting Winston's
statement concerning the August
date for consolidation was C. E. ,
Hoover, commander of David
Perrine Post, No. 19, of the D. A.
V. He said that he had spoken
to numerous veterans on the sub
ject. It is his opinion that "a
single day of celebration should
be urged before Congress" In the

This Is ordinarily a vacation
month, and he added that it
would tend to bring a greater ob
servance of the day throughout
the nation.
'Too Many Holidays'
'There are entirely too many
holidays," declared Sam W.
Starmer. commander of George
Starmer Camp, No. 19, of the
Spanish-American veterans. "A
good day for consolidation would
be November 11, which has be
come a set date in the minds of
eoole throughout the country-"
Starmer added that the proposal
for consolidation should originate
from the veterans' groups them
selves and be presented at their
annual national conventions.
The present Armistice Day
date was also favored as the most
logical for a consolidation by Eu
gene A. Soringer, commander of
L'mpqua Post, No. 16, of the
American Legion.
"One day of remembrance for
all wars seems to me the most
logical," he said. "Selecting Ar
mistice Day, November 11, would
probably have approval among
the veterans of the nation and
would hold greater significance
over the other two victory days in
that it has longer been establish
ed as a day of observance and
celebration. I am not, however,
in favor of selecting a neutral
day for the consolidation."
Housing Shortage
Affects Teachers
The Roseburg school board may
be forced to go into the real estate
business soon, Paul S. Elliott, city
superintendent of schools, said
Tuesday, and unless the housing
shortage lets up soon, students
may be without teachers.
One teacher short at present,
Elliott reports his latest faculty
housing problem concerns a
teacher who made temporary
resilience in a one-room apart
ment in September until some
thing more permanent and suit
able could be found.
Her search, Elliott reported,
has proven futile and she is now
being forced to vacate, which
means her resignation as a local
faculty member in favor of com
munity with suitable housing.
"Teachers' present salaries are
so low that they are unable to
purchase homes of their own.
They can't be expected, even
though a few have, to go against
the old econmical principle that
you can't afford to buy a house
priced- twice above your annual
income.
Elliott also said that he may
have to house his new school cus
todian and wife in one of the
school rooms unless drastic
changes are made in the near
future in the Roseburg housing
situation.
