Al is not a newcomer, but he was absent from the citv for
several years, while engaged in army service, and during
that period we had a large influx of new population, to
whom, the, candidate is a complete stranger. -

through his past work in civic clubs and in athletic promo
tion and do not know the more serious side of his personality.

Boat Capsizes
ReEDSPORT A near-tragedy
occurred near Echo Island In the
Umpqua river, six miles east of
Rccrisnort. Saturday morning
when a fishing skiff carrying Al
bert Hull and his twin sons, Don
ald and Ronald, 17. and Earl
Baldwin, all of Cottage Grove,
capsized and catapulted them In
to the river.
Fortunately thrv were near the
island and the tide was out, and
hey landed In about four feet oi
.water. But their boat Moated
away with all of their fishing
tackle.
Mi's. Mary Boye, who resides
on a river ranch near the point
of the accident, saw the men in
lie river and called a nclchhor.
John Klute, who took a river boat
and went to the rescue. Mrs.
Boye also culled the state police
and the Umpqua River Coast

water down the west channel of
the South Umpqua River, below
the Oak Street Bridge, to lessen
the force of the water against
me awe or me sewage disposal
plant, are under consideration by
the city council, Mayor Charles
w. Wharton said today,
- As soon as the Oak Street
Bridge is again open tp traffic
and the detour route via the
temporary Douglas Street bridge
Is abandoned, the city hopes to
bulldoze a deeper channel on the
west side or the island, which has
beenl dry since last soring.
As; soon as the heavier winter
rains start, tne level of the river

dikes of the city sewage disposal
plant, just below the mouth of
Deer Creek.
Late in the spring, the Lloyd
M. Hill Company made a. verbal
