A few months ago a message was flushed throughout the
world that war had ended and peace had come. People in
this nation hysterically celebrated the joyful news. It was
a message for which the entire world had been waiting, for
it meant cessation of armed hostilities and surcease from
the sufferings of war.
Many great messages have been recorded by history, mes
sages bringing good news and bad to the peoples of thq
worm. uui me greatest message the world ever received
was one spoken by celestial beings from a Hupulcher in Old
Jerusalem many centuries ago when they voiced those words
upon which man's Christian faith is founded: "He is Risen."
We celebrate at Christmas time the birth of Christ and
recall the words of the angelic host upon that occasion. Those
words were a promise. Uut the words spoken on that Easter
morning so long ago, to the women and to the disciples, -were
words of a promise fulfilled.
Creek mythology tells of the beautiful goddess Pandora,
to whom was entrusted a box containing all human ills and
the blessings of the Cods upon mankind. The box, she was
told, must not be opened, but her curiosity could not be
curbed and she disobeyed the command. As a result human
ills were unloosed to prey upon the world, and the bless
ings were lost to man. Only Hope was kept confined within
the box.
On that first Easter morning, when the Rtone was rolled
from the face of the tomb, Hope escaped from confinement,
not to be lost to mankind but, rather, to find an intimate
dwelling place in human hearts.
It was an empty tomb to which the women came at Easter
sunrise, but it had held briefly all virtue, all goodness, all
righteousness. The seal of authority had been spread across
the face of the tomb to retain within the narrow confines
of rock-hewn walls the tortured body In which these virtues j
were embraced. But no authority, no armed guard could
stand against divine intervention, which restored to the
world Cod's blessing.
Recently we -have prevailed victorious in the most san
guinary war the world lias ever known. Brutal authority
had attempted by force to enslave mankind to its lustful
tenets. It flouted righteousness. It wreaked its sadism upon
the helpless, destroying millions of innocent lives in an orgy
of cruelty which defied every divine command and every
moral concept.
But, just as the Roman seal and Roman power, the might
iest force known to the world in that day, could not keep
Christ confined to the tomb, the modern forces of evil could
not defeat the principles of righteousness which came from
the sepulcher to live in the hearts of heroic men.
That message, "He is Risen," has come down through
intervening centuries, and tomorrow millions will bow in
humble confession and worship, celebrating that victory over
death whiuh grows in import with the ages.
John V. Baldridge,
Lumberman, Dies
REEDSPORT, April 20.,-John
Vernon Baldridge, 51, active in
the Oregon lumber industry for

operaior of the Catching-Randall
Lumber mill.
Born in Washington statp, Mr.
Baldridge came to Oregon in
1921, and assisted in the organ,
zation of the Oregon-American
Lumber Company at Vernonia.
For several years he enai"d in
lumbering activities in New
Mexico after which he returned
to Oregon. In 1927 he organ
ized his own company. Baldridge
Brothers, and was active in its
management until recently when
he took over ownership of Catching-Randall
at Drain.
The son of William Ira Bald
ridge, well known Columbia
River lorer, he was a member
of the Recdsports .Sheriffs posse
and the Masonic I.orige. In the
early l!)30s. together with How
ard Hinsdale, he organized the
Gardiner Lumber Company at
Gardiner, Ore.
He is survived bv the widow,
Gertrude; a daughter. Norma;
one son, Donald, all of Reeds
port; four brothers, one sister
and a stepmother.
Funeral services were held at
Reedspoit, Friday. Interment
was at Lincoln Memorial Park
Cemeterv. Portland.

beyond Calvary that made Him
the Redeemer of all mankind,
and our Saviour and Lord. The
first was His resurrection on
Easter morning. Without thli
supreme event, there would
have been no early church, no
Christian Bible, no risen Lord
to oe the Saviour of humanity.
Nothing less than the pres
ence ot the living Christ could
have transformed the lives of
the apostles and made them
martyrs for God. The second
step beyond the Christ of the
Cross is the Christ of the "pres
ence" In the hearts and daily
;lves of believers. It takes all
three to make a Saviour of the
world. The Christ of the Cross,
the Christ of Easter, and the
Christ of heart experience. St.
Paul had this complete Saviour
when he wrote: "It is no longer
I that live, but Christ livcth In
me." Christ in you the hope of
glory. When we have the
Christ of heart experience, we
have the complete Christ. Who
is our Saviour and Lord?
"Vour life is hid with Christ
in God." Keep alive the Spirit
of Easter faith every day, and
thus will the victory of Christ
be yours. Amen.

Here From Wisconsin Mrs.
Henry Platz of LaCrosse, Wiscon
sin, has arrived in Roseburg to
spend two months visiting her
brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and
Mis. Fred Schwartz, on East
Lane street. This is her first trip
to the west coast and yesterday
the Schwartz' took her to Eugene
for the day. Mr. Platz and Mi's.
Schwartz had not seen one an
other for 15 years. She will be
joined in Roseburg in June by
her son, Ronald Platz, and his
wife e.nd their two children, who
are driving out to the west coast K
and wilj take her back to Wis-
consln with them. They plan to
return east via California and the
southern route.

when a new schedule will eo Into

announced today. Under the new
schedule, driver's license exam
iners will be in Koseburiz at the
city hall every week on Tuesday

instead of one day on Thursday.
