ONE Douglas Fir, 70 lo 80 years old, produces 1000 board feel
of lumber. Pictured at left is what this means in DIRECT payrolls,
taxes and trade. Figures do not Include oil costs.
ITIHIS is just the direct "growth" on each" tree.
Indirectly there "grows" still another crop
of business for grocers, hardware stores, banks
and the like, who serve the people who work
with wood. The returns, direct and indirect, in
crease as more methods of utilizing wood are
perfected.
Wood industries account for more than 60i
of the living of Western Washington and Oregon!
THAT'S WHY THESE FACTS ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU:
1, 14,300,000 acres of saw timber are ready for harvest.
2, Young growing forests cover 7,800,000 acres.
3, Over 2,000,000 acres are in privately-owned tree
farms.
4, Private forest industry and your government are
placing "wood growing" on a permanent basis. Tht
is being accomplished through re-seeding of logged
off land, planting seedlings in burned-over areas,
and protection of forests from fire and disease.
THE GREATEST single contribution YOU can make to this pro.
gram is to HELP PREVENT FOREST FIRES.
