OPA. The next problem to bo
faced by the house is the consid
eration of the extension oi the
Price Contral Act OPA). The
senate has already acted on tills
legislation and incorporated hi
the bill both the cost of produc
tion amendments the Wherry
amendment prohibiting the act
ting of prices on farm products
below the producers' cost of pro
duction, and a similar amend
ment authored by Senator
Thomas of Oklahoma, applying ly
meat processing and other manu
factured food products.
1 have attended some of the
hearings held by the house bank
ing and currency committee on
this legislation. The stories of the
abusive administration of the
OPA act are enough to give the
most hardened supporter of Ches
ter of Chester Bowles, the OPA
administrator, a severe chill.
As I have said before, the con
gress faces an impossible situa
tion with reference to the OPA
problem. Price control is neces
sary. The Price Control act is ba
sically a good law. The difficul
ties, shortages and persecutions
that have resulted stem from ex
ecutive orders and administrative
practices. We can incorporate a
few more checks and safeguards
against such maladministration,
but we cannot write administra
tive details into the law. The
troubles with OPA are troubles
born in the executive department
of the government, and must fi
nally be corrected there. Presi
dent Truman will surely soon be
compelled to overhaul the func
tioning of his price control
agency.

Elsenhower Visit. I had the
good fortune to spend some time
with Gen. Eisenhower last fall in
Paris, and know him to be a very
unassuming man, and a person
who obviously does not care for
pomp and ceremony, such as wel
comed him in Washington.
. General Eisenhower is a great
man and a great commanding
general. His feat in leading our
armies to a complete victory over
Germany in exactly eleven
months Is the greatest military
achievement in all history. There
nave Deen otner great military
victories, but none with opera
tions conducted on such a vast
scale or under more difficult coir
ditions. Great as this achieve
ment was, 1 think the fact that
General Eisenhower was able to
win victory with such a rela
tively small loss ot men, consid
ering the millions involved, is the
thing for which he should be hon
ored most. Victory at a high price
is still victory, but victory as won
by General Eisenhower and ins
armies with an absolute mini-
mum os of life is "tweet indeed

MEDICINE FOR TURKEYS.
We hear so much these days
about "flushing" turkeys every
so once in awhile. Some feed
companies say to use their laxa
tive or flushing mash every
week, some every ten days, and
so on and on. The periodicals
talk of the greater need for
physics because of the different
methods of raising turkeys. And
so it goes.
We hesitate to make any def
inite recommendation as to the
if, when, and how often. We
still see quite a number of the
most successful turkey growers
who consistently raise good
turkeys, and never medicate
tnem, unless tney gel sick ana
need It. And it is surprising how
many seasons and how many
'flocks DO GET BY without it.
Other growers, just as suc
cessful, follow some system of
more or less peroidical flushing
or physlcing their flocks, and
they also raise pood turkeys, and
plenty of them. All of which, of
course, proves exactly nothing.
If one glower raises fine tur
keys without laxatives, and an
other does the same with them,
then it seems the only thing we
ain do Is tell you to use your own
judgment.
One thing we will definitely
advise, however, is "don't go to
extremes". We have seen many
rases where physics and laxa
tives were used too strong and
too long with disastrous results.
"Too little too late" might be
about the same as "Too strong
too long".
If you' want to flush your
turkeys, you can feel reasonably
certain they will not be hurt if
you get our Lactose Milk Mash
and feed it from five to eight
hours, according to the age of
the birds. This is a nutritional
flush, and Is not to be confused
with harsh mineral purgatives.

MITES AND LICE.
This warm weather Is going
to be swell for haying, turkeys,
corn, and many other things,
but not for tempers. One thing
that thrives in hot weather Is
chicken mites. They go through
a complete generation In less
than a week, and are they blood
suckers ! ! They can take the
vitality out of a bunch of
chicks, or good laying hens In
a matter of days, If not hours.
They work at night, when
hens are on the roosts, or on
nests. They lower egg produc
tion rapidly, and fertility and
hatchabllity suffer very soon.
Starting with only a few mites,
and doing nothing about them,
you could be out of the chicken
business In a couple months. But
thev can be controlled, and the
damage practically eliminated.
Carbollneum painted or sprayed
according to directions is guar
antied to absolutely prevent
mites for one whole year.
For a small Investment, you
can prevent your laying hens
from being blood donors, pre
vent an early slump In your
production due to mites, and
prevent yourself a huge amount
of discomfort In chasing mites
off your hands and arms, and
out of your hair. At the AIM,1

containers, reatly for you to take

year; knock them out with a
single treatment, and save both
time and money.
MILO MAIZE.
We are frequently asked what
those small round seeds are in
Umpqua Scratch these days.
Looks something like an over
grown radish seed, but isn't.
Well, that is mllo maize, a very
good feed, and used verv ex
tensively for feeding all "kinds
of livestock and poultry In other
sections.
Chemically It is very close to
corn and wheat in feeding value,
and It Is an exceptional case
when birds don't take to it very
quickly. It is actually more di
gestible than even corn.
! WHAT ABOUT ROOSTERS?
The quickest cheap and easy
way to improve your poultry
locks is to get good roosters
every year. Many folks this year
bought either eggs or baby chix
from good flocks from which
.they will get this years males.
.If you didn't do this, get In
touch with somebody right now
who has "ood birds. '
About the time pullers Ix-gln
laying in the fall, many' people
scurry around looking for some
.good roosters. Usually bv that
time, the best of every flock has
decorated some dinner table,
and we have to take' whatever
we can find of the culls. Result
flocks Just don't improve.
Don't delay.
FRESH AIR.
Maybe you get tired belno
asked to give your turkeys more
air. But if you could see every
thing we see, you could under
stand why we continue to harp
on It. The best turkey flocks we
have seen are the flocks that
were put outside to roost at six
or seven weeks.
If the weather Is bad, you
could put a shelter over them
to keep the rain off. But at six
weeks, turkeys SHOULD BE
READY for outside roosting. We
have seen several flocks that
have roosted out without cover
for the past month, and they
look swell. Why not get over the
Idea that they are so delicate?
They are not, unless we make
them that way.
