rtOPE PIUS XII has appealed to the people of London, ac
T cording to news dispatches, to bear their trials with forti
tude and with "Christian sentiments of forgiveness, charity
and mercy, so that God may reward what the world will ad
mire an example of magnanimity inspired by the spirit of
Christ's gospel"
The papal plea is a tough order for a nation which experi
enced the the "blitz," which numbers Dunkerque among its
dark hours, and which, even now, is experiencing the wanton
destruction of life and property wrought by the "buzzbomb,"
the robot weapon which serves no purpose other than to ter
rify and kill helpless men, women and children, destroying
homes, schools, churches and hospitals with a ruthlessness
and savagery which makes -mockery of the word "civilization."
forgiveness, charity und mercy" are Christian principles
dear to the heart of the leader of a mighty church, which
sheds its influence upon all the world and serves as spiritual
guide to millions of people in all lands. They are attributes
essential to any continued peace.
But a passive Christianity cannot deal with today's im
mediate problems. Christianity must be militant to wipe out
the terrible scourge of evil which has risen to plague all peo
ples. The madmen who have despoiled the world must
themselves be destroyed and their civil influence erased from
the minds of men. To the mind which looks upon human
kindness, mercy and forgiveness as signs of weakness, the
application of those qualities is futile. Those who under
stand or appreciate nothing but force, might, and power can
be -.subdued, only by superior force, might and power. Men
Who, steeped jn theories of muster races, torture, kill and
destroy in frenzy of egomania, are the very antithesis of
the Christian. Militant Christianity, therefore, must de-
troy this evil.

But once the scourge has been removed; the cancer of

then there is healing in the words of the pontiff's appeal:
"Our lively hope and our confident conviction is that you

separated brethren to return to the fold and so make your
contribution toward the establishment on earth ot the
reign of Christ, the Prince of Peace."
