SCOUT FUND IS'", ,
AIDED BY DANCE
SUTHERLIN - The Aprii Fool
day dance given by Sutherlin
Boy and Girl Scout troops was
a very gay and colorful . affair.
Starting at 8:30 with the grand
march, the boys and girls, dress
ed in old fashioned Colonial cos
tumes tripped their way through
the above arranged program to
the great interest and enjoyment
of a large crowd. Stiffly starched
petticoats .rustled and coat tails
flipped as the dancers expertly
executed some of the old fashion
ed dances that are ncw.to many
now. The show was stolen how
ever, by three very small but
very determined dancers., who
will have to add a dozen years
to their ages before they can be
come scouts. . The Misses Judy
Rose and Judy Hensley dressed In
floor length "formals" vied with
each other for the favor of Mast
er Jerry Lang, blond and frock
coated young "gent". The little
dancers missed, not one dance
and some new and very fancy
steps were added to the dances
that were much appreciated by
the entire audience. Miss Rose
Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Noah Rose, Jr., and Miss Hensley
is the youngest daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. A. C, Hensley. Jerry
Lang Is the youngest son of Mr.
and Mrs. James Lang, Jr., and
is a close, follower In the foot
steps of his elder brother Jimmy.
The affair, given to add to' the
Scout building' fund was a de
cided financial success, netting
$237.50 for that purpose. The
cake sale proved a success and
was in charge of ,D. E. Barnes,
of Oakland, a veteran auctioneer.
Refreshments, , served cafeteria
style. were In charge of the Girl

Cordon's Taking
Of Webster's Seat
Stirs CohtroVersyi
WASHINGTON, April 12.
(AP) A 97th seat in the senate
may be the only solution for a hot
controversy that has republicans
in a dither. . ,
It all started when .Senator
White of Maine became acting
G. O, P. leader and moved to the
front row, center, .chair .which
had been held .down by the late
Senator McNary of Oregon. ,
White,- as acting leader, want
ed to keep his old desk too, be
cause it once, was occupied by
Daniel Webster. Temporarily Sen
ator Cordon of Oregon, whq re
placed McNary, has moved into
the historic Webster scat.
This hasn't pleased some repub
licans who have seniority and
whq want to sit where Webster
sat. They even have talked of
having a 97th seat put in, where
Cordon could carry on his duties,
leaving Webster's place vacant
until it is decided whether White
will return to his old desk or
keep the new.
The republicans are afraid,
though, ' that' It might take un
animous consent to put No, 97 in
the line and some . mischevious
democrat would be' almost cer
tain to object.
Little Activity1
Italian Waf Front'
, ALLIED HEADQUARTERS,
Naples, April 13 (AP) German
forces in the Garigllanb ! sector
southwest of Cassino have begun
to assume a more aggressive spir
it, reacting sharply to allied re
connaissance.; .. .
There are Indications "that the
nazis arc continuing to regroup
the forces which were observed
there last week arid German en
gineer?, seem to be mining 'the
Garigllano river. . .
t Yesterday, there were a num
ber of, minor patrol clashes on
the Adriatic sector arid the' Ger
mans made attacks, on several'
houses southwest of Crecchlo, but
the , front generally rernalricd
quiet. , . ,,, ,
Enemy trucks moving4, up to
Cassino along the highway six
miles south of the town were
shelled by allied, artillery. There
was little activity in Cassino It
self, however.
Quiet, too, reigned on the An
zio beachhead front below Rome,
although there was some artil
lery duelling. Southwest of Cis
terna two enemy guns were re
ported silenced by allied shells.
