POET'S CORNER
DAY'S WORK FOR THE
AIR FORCE
The bomb bays aro filled tohe
top for this trip;
She's ready for her share of the
yellow Nip.
We all climb In and check our
gear; ,
All eyes are grave with impend
fear. The props are pulled through,
tho engines drone,
As she swings .and sways on the
ramp alone.
She snorts as she taxis down the
short runway,
For she has a bundle of hell in
her big bomb bay.
She thunders, roars and begins
to stump,
As she whirls away down the
takeoff ramp.
The pilot pulls back, and all is
well-
She's up and away with her load
of hell.
She sticks up her nose and be
gins to climb,
And we all stand by as the en
gines whine.
; She steadies down the last half
! of the lap,
And cuddles the load that will
repay the Jap.
' The target Is near and It's I'pl

j Let's get on the ball; you know
I what to do."
j Tho safeties arc off, we poor and

While they're coining up to take
! that first chance.
The target is sighted. Wo swing
in on course. -All
nerves are tight and voices
are hoarse. . r
' We know far below tho frighten

Will throw all he has at our
threatening ship!
i The rats swing to action from
tar below,
The acks acks spark as they start
to throw. .
Up come their blossoms, tho sky
is lit;
Now, our bombs aro away, and
we hoiK' for a hit.
Tin- bombardier swells at tho ball
turret's shout:
"Bull's-eye, wo hit her right on
tho snout!"
Wo slip away from that deadly
tiaK,
The fighters come In as wc set
our course back.
Tho pilot's voice comes buck to
us:
' Keep Vm out hoys, we'll get out
of this muss."
The co-pilot warns: "Waloh that
one on the wing,
lie's iiiming In with that fish-
tailed swing."
They loop and roll, they swing
and dive,
Oh God, it's nice to still be alive!
Our plane its tattered and torn,
it's true.
Hut the main thing Is. we all
fame through!
The fight is over, our nerves aro
gone.
The navigator's singing nvor In

DAILY DEVOTIONS
DR. CHARLES A. EDWARDS
An old age poem tells of a
father and son lost at night in
an unfamiliar country, the son
rushed feverishly about in
search of trails or clues. The
father stood still, gazing up
Into the sky. When the son
remonstrated, he replied. Earth
ways can only be found by
looking at the stars. This ap
parently was the conclusion of
the ancient , seers, whose pro
longed study of the heavens di
rected their thoughts toward
the discovery of a new source
of inspiration and power for
human life, "They saw the
star, and they -rejoiced with
exceeding great joy." Their
search was a long and eager
one. They were undismayed
by the length of the journey
or the hardships involved,
Their minds were open and
responsive Jo the summons of
new truth. Their souls were
wistful and adventurous. They
may have been old in years, as
we sometimes picture them,
but they were young in their
hearts. The childlikeness of
their own natures fitted them
to appreciate the Divine Child,
who proved to be the culmina
tion of their quest, "We three
kiflgs of Orient are bearing
gifts we traverse afar. Field
and fountain, moor and moun
tain following yonder, O star
of wonder, star of night, star
with royal beauty bright.
Guide us to thy perfect light.
Amen, .
