YONCALLA, July 12. Mr. and
Mrs. Kenneth Mulkey of Red
Hill have received a letter from
their son, Merle, the first one for
several months. He is now at
Norfolk, Virginia, where the ship
he is on is undergoing some re
pairs.
Mr. and Mrs. Tim Mills came
near losing their home by fire,
Saturday morning, when fat,
which Mrs. Mills was rendering
out on the cook stove, caught fire.
Dut to the quick work of the Yon
calla volunteer fire department,
under the leadership of C. D. Mc
Elmurry, the blaze was soon put
out. The rooms were badly smok
ed, but the fire loss was slight.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Upsbaw and
two children of Portland spent
the last weekend visiting at the
Luther Daugherty home. Mr. Up
sbaw returned to Portland and
Mrs. Upshaw and the children are
still here visitnig.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Van Oppen
and son of Eugene are spending
their two weeks vacation at the
parental D. C. Wilson home.
Mrs. Mary Bentx left Thurs
day for Brownwood, Texas,
where she will be near her hus
band, who is with the U. S. army.
D. C. McGinitie left Wednesday
for a months visit to Tofield,
Canada.
Bert Lufkin of Creswell and
his daughter, Mrs.- Roy Higglns,
of Auburn, Wash., visited friends
here over the weekend.
Mr and Mrs. Wallace Patrick
Is visiting at the A. H. Patrick
home. Mr. Patrick will leave
shortly to join the army as chap
lain. Mrs. Ralph Long and two chil
dren of Canyon Dam, Calif.,
spent the weekend visiting at
the Morin home.
Leo Morin, who is with the U.
S. navy, is home on a short fur
lough. Mr.and Mrs. Hal Billings of
I'orlland spent the weekend here
visiting friends. They have pur
chased a hundred acres of land
on Red Hill and will build a
home there in the near future.

FEED WHEAT HALTED
Government stocks of wheat
again have been cut off as - a
source of feed for Oregon live
stock and poultry. Commodity
Credit was forced to discontinue
feed wheat sales this week for
the third time, when the 50-mil-lion
bushel allocation authorized
by congress last month was ex
hausted. A total of 275 million
bushels of government wheat
have been sold to feeders since
the program started in March,
1912.
'43 WHEAT INSURANCE GOOD
Oregon wheat growers aro as
sured that they will receive full
protection of their federal all
risk crop Insurance on their 1313
crops. Discontinuance of the pro
gram, ordered by congress, will
have no effect on this year's in
surance. Insured growers will re
ceive prompt adjustment of loss
es on the 1943 crop.
1944 FERTILIZER SUPPLIES
Larger fertilizer supplies than
ever before will bo available to
help Oregon farmers get maxi
mum crop production next year.
Supplies of nitrogen will be the
largest In history about a third
more than this year. More phos
phate will be available this year,
but potash supplies will be some
what less than this year. To put
chemical fertilizer where it will
:lo tho most good to boost war
crop production, distribution will
iu,'ain be controlled by War Food
administration regulations. As
this year, crops will be divided in
to A and B groups. A crops will
get first priority, but growers ol
B crops will not be required lo
show that they have used fertil

FARMSTEAD WIRING
WPB regulations (Order P-141),
which provide farmstead wiring
material for farmers certified by
county USDA War boards as eli
gible for oloctrlc service, have
been extended until July 31. The
order, which permits eligible
farms to apply an AA-3 rating
for UP to 75 pounds of copper
wire, originally expired June 30.
It will be shortly replaced by an
allocation program which will
enable farmers to apply to the
county USDA War Board for a
purchase certificate to obtan cop
per wire.
FARM BATTERY PRICES
Farmers need not pay more
than the March, 1942 prices for
farm batleries- for radios, tele
phones, Ignition systems, fence
controllers. Sellers asking in
creased prices are violating OPA
ceilings, and should be reported
lo the War Price and Rationing
board.
PRICE SUPPORTS FOR SPUDS
With large supplies ol new
crop potatoes coming Into mar
ket, the War Food administration
has announced (hat it intends to
provide full support to market
prices at previously announced
levels. Supiiort prices for Oregon
for No. 1 potatoes are $2 a hun
dred, Klamath county basis, and
1.80, Malheur, with 15-cenl in
creases as the season progresses.
CANNER8' PRICES APPROVED
So far 38 Oregon processors
have been certified by the Ore
gon USDA War board as paying
al least specified approved prices
to growers for seven vegetables.

There's not much chance ot

able to buy a new electric house
hold refrigerator for the dura
tion, the Portland office of the
War Production board advises.
Production of new refrigerators
was practically halted some
months ago, and the limited num
ber available In manufacturers'
and distributors' stocks is reserv
ed for tho armed forces and for
the preservation of public health.
There aro no restrictions, how
ever, on sale of any refrigerators
in retailors' slocks.
FOOD FRONT BRIEFS
Ceilings on screenings .have
been established by OPA on a dol-lar-and

Grass Fire Started by

The Roseburg fire department "
was called Monday afternoon to
the Reservoir hill road, where a
grass fire was accidentally start
ed near the highway by a boy
playing with matches. The blaze
was extinguished before damage
was caused.
