Lose Five Hitters
Cleveland, Cincinnati Score
Victories; Boston Defeats
- Dodgers After 1 5 Battles
' By JUDSON BAILEY
(Associated Press Sports Writer)
Only two five-hit ball games
were pitched in the major
' leagues yesterday and neither of
them was Rood enough to win.
If you were given a blindfoli
', test and asked to name one of
the pitchers who had the misfor
tune to lose such a well pitched
.. game it s almost certain you
would name lefty Edgar Smith
of the Chicago White Sox on the
first guess.
You would be right, or course.
Everything happens to Cotton
Ton and last night it was Lou
. Boudreau. The boy manager of
; the Indians personally collected
', four of (he five hits made off
Smilli aid one was Boudreau's
' first homer of the year.
That explains In a nutshell
how Smilh acquired his I2lh set
back of the season opposite two
triumphs, although he has pitch
' ed consistently spectacular ball
all year. Uagby, working on one
day's rest, kept the Sox to seven
safeties in gaining his ninth vic
tory; but needed the aid of
Chubby Dean.
The other losing five-hitter
also was pitched by a Chlcagoan

the 36-year-old rookie, obtained
his 11th victory against three de
feats. Mort Cooer of the St. Louis
Cardinals matched Starr's 11-3
won and lost record by beating
the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2, but
saw his streak of consecutive
scoreless Innings snapped at 32
and lost whatever chance he had
of getting his fourth slialght shut
out when Fletcher homered In
the first Inning.

The Boston Braves slopped the
Brooklyn Dodgers 4-3 for the
first time in 15 games over a
period stretching back Into the
1941 season. Casey, the relief
specialist, started on the mound
for Brooklyn but was removed
for a plnchhlturv with the score
tied at 3-all In the third. Rookie
Les Weber gave up the winning
run In the fifth.
Melton achieved his tenth tri
umph as the New York Giants
nosed out the Phils 4-3 on a run
which Mellon himself singled

The faltering New York Yan
kees saw their American league
lead shrivel to 44 games as they
divided a doublehcHdcr at Phila
delphia while (lie Boston Red
Sox swept a pair of games from
the Washington Senators.
The Yanks dropped their first
tussle 8-5 for their third straight
loss and 10th in 15 games. It
was the first defeat of the year
for Borowy and the first win for
