American Legion
Auxiliary Activities
By MRS. CLAUDE BAKER
"It is good just to be an Ameri
can," commented Commander Ir
vin Riegel to the Legion and its
auxiliary this week. "No finer
heritage could be given a man,"
he said. His birthright includes
many things that the men of
other nations can only yearn for,
knowing that there is slight pos
sibility that they will ever be
realized."
"Being an American," continu
ed Commander Riege, "carries
an obligation that cannot be met
by thanks alone; there is a duty
to preserve our liberties, that our
children may also enjoy them; a
duty to defend our nation against
attacks from without and within.
It will be our future duty to
make this country better as a
home for all, that we may all re
joice and be thankful."
"The members of the American
Legion," Commander Riegel said,
"nnd its million members are
grateful for the privileges we en
joy as American citizens and
thankful for the strength and
courage to carry on our program
to serve God and country.
"We are thankful for our auxil
iary," Umpqua post's commander
stated with a smile, "for our auxil
iary. 600.000 strong. For our
mothers, wives, sisters and daugh
ters united in one common
cause, to honor the dead by serv
ing the living."
Rev. Perry Smith, legionnaire
and past national chaplain of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, com
mented in a similar vein when
he said, "To be thankful is not
enough. We must give service or
that spirit from truly grateful
hearts will die. Only so can our
country live," he said. "For God
and country we associate our
selves together."
President Bess Riegel In speak
ing of the program of the auxil
iary explained that they are giv
ing energetic services in all fields
where the patriotic work of wo
men can be effective. "We need
greater strength than ever be
fore," she said, "because of the
greater need for the work we are
In a position to do. We are urg
ing all eligible women of the
Roseburg vicinity to come into our
unit now and help us carry for
ward our great program of ser
vice. We have 107 members al
ready since October," President
Bess, pleased with her unit, said.
"That is a lot of members for the
first month."
Hundreds of thousands of wo
men throughout the country are
now enrolling in the auxiliary be
cause that is the place where
they can enlist for patriotic ser
vice, said National Defense Chair
man Christine Micelli.
The auxiliary is still chuckling
over the silly antics of the Legion
as they entertained the unit this
week. They always do whatever
they attempt right royally. And
such eats! The women declared
they hadn't before tasted the like.
Friendship is a warming thing.
Those made within the Legion
family are most dear.
"Its just a sense of friendliness
For those who jtoss our road
With just a helping hand or two
For easing up the load.
But sometimes it Is just a smile
That lights the good we've
wrought
And that's our thought of friend
liness
A smile, a touch, a thought,
icht Coughs
ue to colds . . . eased
without "dosing".

WE ARE THANKFUL
As
we approach Thanksgiving
Day,
We're thankful in the usual way,
For blessings great and blessings
small.
But most of all
We're thankful good old U. S. A.
No cruel despot must obey,
That justice still prevails.
And liberty regales.
Our thanks for this, and even
more
That war has not yet touched
our shore;
For scarcely nowhere else on
earth
Can words like these be given
birth.
Then let us now together kneel.
And humbly let us make appeal
To do our part to keep the peace
So dear to all, and that war will
cease.
