Air Filter Unit
Here Still Needs
Women Workers
Approximately 40 women still
are needed to man the air de
fense warning service filter cent
er at the Roseburg armory, ac
cording to Lieutenant John Tru
man Runyan, remanding officer.
Efforts, are being made to pro
vide a personnel of IHO volunteer
workers, thoroughly trained In
all departments '6f"ihe work and
at present registration is about
10 short of the goal.
Filter center workers are asked
to give about five hours per
month to training and practice,
Lieutenant Runyan reports.
Classes are held each second and
fourth week, each session lasting
for about two and one-half hours.
This is all the time that will be
required of volunteers, he states,
except In case of actual emergen
cy, or In an occasional test.
Work Easy To Learn
"I fully realize that the recruit
ing of 100 women for this work
in a city the size of Roseburg is
a difficult task," Lieutenant Run
yan said, "but I believe It can be
accomplished. This is the same
sized crew that is being formed in
cities of much greater population,
yet I believe that we will have
no more difficulty in obtaining
the desired number of volunteers
than will be encountered In cities
where the population is larger.
"We have had a few cases in
w hich we have found women who
wanted to volunteer their servic
es but feared that the work was
too complicated and difficult to
learn. This is not the case and,
In fact, we have found only a very
few women who could not quickly
irid easily learn the procedure.
I The work is not hard to learn
and It is possible to become
thoroughly proficient In only one
or two practice sessions. No wo
man desiring to serve In this de
fense capacity need be afraid of
encountering any difficulty."
Importance Pointed Out
Mr. Runyan points out that the
air defense warning service is
the onlv civilian defense measure
over which the V. S. army exer
cises direct supervision. This
service, he states, will be of the
utmost Importance, both In mili
tary and civilian defense in the
event of Pacific coast air raids,
which, in view of possible de
velopments of the near future,
may very easily materialize.
Any women of Roseburg or vi
cinity who are willing to give the
small amount of time and effort
needed to prepare for service in
this branch of the defense pro
gram are urged by Mr. Runyan to
register Immediately at the office
of the Roseburg chamber of com
merce. The next practice sessions will
be held Monday, Tuesday and
Thursday, Nov. 24, 25 and 27, and
it is hoped to have the crews re
cruited to full strength by that
time, Lieutenant Runyan states.
Back From Portland Mr. and
Mrs. Roy W. Ohman have return
ed hero from Portland, where
Mr. Ohman has ben employed
for several weeks. They lived
here before going lo Portland.
