Carroll Warren McColpin of
Buffalo, N. Y., a member of the
All-American Eagle squadron in
the RAK, baRKed two German
planes on a sweep over northern
franco yesterday, the air minis
try announced.
He attacked six -Messer-liciu.iins.
McColpin has now shot down
five planes and ranks with Pilot
Officer Gregory A. Daymond of
Van Nuys, Calif., among the
Eagles.
Pilot Officer W. R. Dunn,
whose nearest relatives live at
Dallas, Tex., also has shot down
five in aerial combat and two
while a ground gunner.
McColpin, flying with two oth
ers of the squadron, became sep
arated from them in a rain
squall, but continued on a solo
sweep over France while the oth
ers returned to their base.
When he saw the six Messer
schmilts 500 feet above ground,
he dived on them "and in a mat
ter of seconds one had blown up
and the other had dived Into the
ground," the air ministry said.
During the sweep seven planes,
including the two destroyed by
McColpin, were shot down, the
ministry ndded. The seaplane
base at Ostend was silenced, gun
posts were attacked, and a fac
tory and barges hit.
Suicide Verdict Filed
In Death of Soldier
FORT LEWIS, Ocr. 28. (API
The army announced today an
officers' board of Inquiry had re
turned a verdict of suicide in the
death of Corp. Frank Church, 24,
of Prosser, found shot through
the temple In a barracks' shower
room Saturday.
The board's findings showed
Church to have had an excellent
army record. He was inducted in
to service a year ago and was
with Company A, 161st infantry
regiment, 41st division.
There were no eye witnesses
to the death. Survivors include
his mother, Mrs. Harry Partch,
of Prosser.
Suit Demands $1,250 on
Loss in Pinball Machine
SALEM, Oct. 29.--IAP) Suit
to recover $1,250 which he claims
to have lost In a pinball machine
was filed in circuit court here by
L. T. Groves against Charles A.
Johnston, operator of Chucks
tavern, and N. J. Arnold, agent
for the company which distri
butes the machines.
He said he lost the money be
tween March 1, 1940, and Octo
ber, 1941.
