Civil Service Opens Batch
Of Jobs to Examination
The civil service commission
has announced an examination
for positions as specialist in ma
ternal and child health. The sal
aries range from $3,200 to $5,000
a year. Positions In the children's
bureau, department of labor, will
be filled from these examinations.

bureau may also be filled at the
request of the states. Applicants
must have been graduated from
medical school cf recognfc!
standing, with the degree of M.
D., and must have served one
year of Interneship. In addition
they must have had full-time post
interneship clinical training as
well as other appropriate experi
ence in one of the options. Ap
plications must be filed at the
commission's. Washington office
not later than November 15, 1941.
Qualified persons are asked to
apply for positions of inspector,
engineering materials I aeronau
tical I; toolmaker, machinist, and
project auditor.

secretary of the local service
board, at the postofflce building
in this city.

Social Security Program
Expansion Is Planned
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (API
President Hoosevelt disclosed
yesterday that the administration
was contemplating a broad ex
pansion of the social security pro
gram with the twnf'-ld o'sc'.ive
of deterring Inflation and casing
readjustment after the current
emergency ends.
lie told a press conference that
he probably would submit to con
gress soon a message on the mai
ler and that perhaps the number
of persons to be brought under
social security would be doublsd.
On a guess, lie said, the num
ber might be increased from
forty to eighty million persons.
He said, too, that it might lie
necessary to boost payroll taxes.
The chief executive, who had
considered the social security
problem earlier in Ihe day with
a group of government officials,
said It was desired to make cov
erage as wide as ossihlc and also
to give federal aid to poorer
states.
