she was six years old. She will

' She Is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. H. D. MeCurdy, of
Heppner, and was a princess of
the Heppner rodeo six years ago;
was rodeo queen in 1938 and in
1!)3!J was a Round-Up princess.
Miss MeCurdy holds a private
airplane pilot's license, having
been the first to qualify for the
distinction out of a class of 20,
18 boys and two girls, following
Instruction at a private flying
field. She has been a student at
Pacific university for the last
two years.

mond Spore and Mrs. Ivan Welch
as assisting hostesses. Roll call
was answered with sewing hints,
many very useful suggestions be
ing given. Many Items of inter
est were discussed during the

John Ferguson presided. It was
voted to hold the annual bazaar
Friday, December 5. Plans for
the Red Cross water safety
classes were discussed and also
plans for the aluminum drive
which is to be sponsored in this
vicinity by the club. Mrs. Emily
Post of the county Red Cross
unit was present for a short time
and told most interestingly of the
variety of work carried on by
the Red Cross. She brought ma
terials from the Roseburg unit
for the local women to make up
into garments. Harry Pinniger,
secretary of the Roseburg cham
ber of commerce, was also pres
ent and told of the various ways
in which the women may help In
national defense.
Sewing on articles for the ba
zaar was done during the after
noon at the close of which the
hostesses served delicious re
freshments. Mrs. Irene Clark of
Broadus, Montana, received the
guest prize while Mrs. R. A.
Moore drew the 'club prize for
the month. The roll call subject
for the August meeting which
will occur the afternoon of Wed
nesday, August 20, will be hints
on either cooking or canning.
The place of the meeting will be
announced later.

Neck Exercises Fatal
To Elderly Citizen

garded warnings of neighbors
that it was dangerous for him to
experiment , with neck-stretching
exercises.
Flower, a former resident of
Bonanza, Ore., was found dead
yesterday, hanging from a tree
by a small rope attached to a
strap about his neck.
Sheriff Charles Sllva said
Flower probably suffered a heart
attack while trying to perform
the exercises while seated on a
make-shift sawhorse.
Grows Beard Under
Protest, Will Keep It
EUGENE, July 29, f AP) For
eight weeks J. W. McArthur,
superintendent of the city water
board, grumbled about having to
grow a beard for the Oregon
Trail pageant pioneer celebra
tion. The celebration was over Sun
day, and Monday morning, Mr.
McArthur walked Into his office
all smiles with his thick beard.
He liked it so well he's think
ing of growing it until 1944, the
date of the next pageant, he said.

The last battle of the Civil War
occurred May 11, 1865, after the
surrender of General Lee at Ap-
pomattox, Va. On that date

War Relief Group to Meet
The War Relief Sewing group

that a large shipment was sent
from Roseburg July 22nd to
Portland, where it left by boat
for England. Any person inter

Electricians In
New York Strike

All electricians In New York
City called a strike for today ef
fective throughout the five bor
oughs, and some union officials
predicted that the walkout ulti
mately might tie up 250,000 con
struction workers.
Immediately, the action In
volved about 8,000 skilled electri
cians, the brotherhood said. A
spokesman said the strike was
voted as a protest over a contro
versy between the union and the
Consolidated Edison company
concerning the right of union
members to perform electrical
construction work on an Edison
power plant in Manhattan.
At Key West, Fla., construc
tion of new naval bases was shut
down yesterday when some 600
AFL-affillated carpenters, paint
ers and plumbers walked out In
sympathy with 800 laborers who
had struck for a wage increase
from 40 to 62 J cents an hour.
Naval authorities said $2,000,
000 worth of work was involved,
and warned that civil service em
ployes would be Imported for the
Job If the strike went on.
Another strike of AFL laborers
continued to impede construction
of an $89,000,000 ammunition
plant at St. Louis, Mo.

14 Senators Form
Opposition Bloc
WASHINGTON, July 29.
(AP) Fourteen members of the
senate's so-called "non-interven
tion bloc" decided at a meeting
today to offer organized opposi
tion to legislation giving the
president authority to retain citi
zen soldiers In uniform beyond
the present limit of one year.
Senator Wheeler (D., Mont.),
spokesman, sail the group plan
ned opposition speeches but
would make no attempt to fili
buster against the measure.
The resolution, declaring that
the national interest is imperiled
cr.il providing machinery to keep
the present army intact, is sche
duled for senate consideration
beginning tomorrow. Admini
stration lieutenants confidently
predicted Its approval by a sub
stantial senate majority later in
the week.

Reach Agreement
LONDON, July 29. (API
General Wladislaw Sikorsky, pre
mier of the Polish government
in exile, said today that his gov
ernment had reached an agree
ment with the Russian govern
ment "on honorable conditions."
The Polish leader made his an
nouncement at a luncheon of the
Foreign Press association, where
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden
also spoke.

diplomatic relations and
the freeing of some 200,000 Polish
war prisoners now In Russia.
These, it is contemplated, would
be formed into a Polish legion
to fight against Germany.
Boy Scours Leave Camp
For Three-Day Trip
Sixteen Boy Scouts from the
Wolf Creek camp left this morn
ing with leader, Harold Johnson,
on a 30 mile hike taking them up
Wolf creek to Watson's cabin
and to Grand Guard camp to re
main overnight. Tomorrow they
will start toward the Quartz
mountain guard camp to remain
overnight and Thursday will
hike to Lookout mountain and on
to Steamboat, where the ranger
there will pick them up in a for
estry truck and take them back
to the Wolf Creek camp.
