DOB LANDS SAFELY
TN the village of Blolr, Ariz.,
Carolyn and her rescuer found
one light burning. It was in a
large house that seemed to be a
combined residence and store. An
efficient-looking woman in night
robe answered immediately when
Carolyn ran to the door and
knocked,
"Hollo! I Have you a tele
phone? May I please call fUl
help? If I can just telephone
Boulder Dam, I might "
"Come In, honey!" The woman
interrupted Carolyn's frantic talk,
appraised her quickly. ( "Look
here, honey, is your name Tyler,
and did you drop outen a air
plane?" "Yes! Oh!"
"Well, I'm that glad it's yuu!
They've been already phoning
about you. They's men out al
ready on a search. Now ain't this
just dandy!
"Come in, child. You look be
draggled. Ain't you cold? They've
already phoned about you from
Boulder. I expect it's been on the
radio, loo.
"Law, I expect they're a-tcai uig
around every whichaway, for one
as young and sweet as you! Now
you just phone 'em buck right now
ps quick as you can, and I'll get
you something warm and dry!"
Tha good woman, not one to be
overly excited, was plainly ex
cited. Carolyn grabbed her.
"What about Bob? Dr. Hale?
Tell me! He must be safe or no
body would know where I is he?
Who called?"
l"Honey, set down a minute!
He's safe. Him and the man fly
ing him both is safe. It was a
Mr. Hale : that " called me. He
said"
That was all Curolyn needed.
She called . Boulder Dam spe
cifically, Boulder City, Nev., the
town near the great dam. The
operator there couldn't get Bob
for her at the moment but did
get the local airport, and the licld
nfflciiil told her that Hob and the
plane had come in safely.
Bob wus about crazy, the olll

and he would get word to Bob

Ho talked some more, but Caro
lyn didn't hear It. If the kindly
woman hcru hadn't come quickly,

of its zest last night when Joe
DiMaKfflo's phenomenal hitting
streak came to an end, but the
pennant aspirations of the New
York Ynnkrf-s may bo belter off.
Joe rolled up an all-time major
league record for hitting safely in
50 consecutive contests.
The biggest night crowd In
baseball history, b'7,4u'8, Jammed
Cleveland's stadium last night,
more to watch DIMagglo than to
see the two top contenders In the
American league settle their pen
nant problems.
Lust nigilt Joe was slopped for
the first time since May 15 by
two great stubs by Ken Keltner
and the pitching of Al Smith und
Jim Baghy. But the Yankees
won a 4 3 decision from the In
dians and came close to locking
up the chumpionship.

cheek, with some ninth-inning
help by Johnny Murphy, on a

series, Sacramento today held
Its slimmest lead over the Pacific
coast league since the beginning
of the season eight games.
Seattle's ninth inning rally
knocked over the Solons 6 to 5
last night, giving the Rainiers
two games of the three-contest
split-week series. Last week San
Diego trounced the league lead

Oregon Archers To
Compete at Umpqua
All arrangements have been
completed by the Umpqua Arch
ery club for the Six Gold meet to
be held by the club at Umpqua,
Sunday, July 20. Invitations have
been sent to archers in all parts
of Oregon and a large attendance
is expected.
Registration of archers will be
gin at 9 a. m., to be followed Im
mediately by the clout shoot for
both men and women. Following
a picnic lunch there will be a
double American round for men
and a double Columbia for wo
men. There will be an official award,
consisting of a pin and a certifi
cate, given by the National Arch
ery association, with which the
Umpqua club is affiliated, for any
archer who shoots one perfect
end from any distance. In addi
tion prizes will be given by the
Umpqua club in each event.
