The meeting officially opened
at 3:30 in the afternoon at the
Hotel Umpqua with Mrs. Arn
est, state regent, presiding. The
pledge to the flag was followed
by the minutes read by the sec
retary; by-laws of southern Ore
gon district were read and voted
on and reports of eleven chapter
regents present. Two state past
presidents were introduced.
The banquet program was led
by Mrs. Eueidas K. Scott on the
subject of cooperation of the
two American continents, their
cultural values, particularly mu
sic and speakers. Assisting Mrs.
Scott on this panel discussion in
cluded: Mrs. Roy Roberts, Pan
ama: Mrs. Horsfall, Ecuador;
Mrs. Harding, Chile; Mrs. Mel
vin, Argentina, and Mrs. Shad
duck, Brazil.
On Friday morning the state
board met at a breakfast at 7:45
o'clock at the Hotel Umpqua, fol
lowed by the state board meet

The Presbyterian Ladles Aid
society held its last meeting of
the season at a very enjoyable
one oclock potluck luncheon
Thursday at the beautiful home
of Mrs. George Sewell on Spruce
street. Colorful summer flowers
were attractively arranged about
the rooms.
Mrs. E. S. Hall, president, con
ducted the business meeting and
appointed flower committees for
the summer months. Mrs. Lula
Gorrell and her sister, Mrs. Hart
ley, sang a duet, followed by an
enjoyable social hour.
The first fall meeting of the
aid will be held September 18th
with Mrs. Fred Hamilton as gen

The couple are honeymooning

Civilian Defense
Registration Set
The week from June 23 to 28
has been proclaimed by Gover
nor Sprague as Registration week
for civilian defense, the Douglas
county defense council was in
formed today. All civilians will
ing to work in defense posts are
requested to register for volun
teer service during the week.
The council has been furnished
with registration blanks, which
will be made available at central
locations in each community. Reg
istration for Roseburg and Imme
diate vicinity will be conducted at
the chamber of commerce office.
Volunteers will be requested to
give a report on past experience
and will be asked to designate
any particular service In which
they desire to engage in defense
work.
Women will be requested to
volunteer for nursing duties, tele
phone Operation, stenography,
and other such work, while men
will be asked to signify their pref
erence for duty as resei-ve fire
men, special police, guard duty,
etc.

Mrs. Alice M. Bateman
Of Roseburg Passes Away
Mrs. Alice Maria Bateman, 89,
of 731 Fleser street, died at her
home today following a prolonged
period oi illness. She was born in
Calhoun county, Michigan, De
cember 4, 1851, and was married
to William N. Bateman at Lans
ing, Michigan, June 10, 1875. Mr.
'Bateman died In July, 1925. Mrs.
Bateman came to Oregon in 1927
making her home at Myrtle Point
for about 10 years. For the last
three years she has made her
home In Roseburg.
Surviving are two brothers, C.
B. Denison of Eugene, Oregon,
and F. A. Denison of Roseburg.
She is also survived by two granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held In
the chapel of the Douglas Funeral
home Tuesday morning at 10:30
o-ciocK, kcv. L. T. Hannon of the
Nazarene church officiating. Fol
lowing services here, the body
will be taken to the Norway
cemetery near Myrtle Point,
where concluding services will be
held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday aft
ernoon. The arrangements are In

Two Fined for Spree,
Third for License Lack
Pleading guilty to charges of
being drunk on a public highway,
Frank Robert Phelps, 33, Myrtle
Point, and James I). Martlndaie,
66, Camas Valley, were fined $10
each in the justice court at Rose
burg today. Jesse Lee Huff, 21, of
Citias Valley, reported to have
been the driver of the car In
Which Phelps and Martlndaie
were riding, was fined $10 for op
erating the car without a driver's
license. He was not intoxicated,
according to the state police- re
port. '
