April is Child Welfare month
and plans are being made by
Mrs. Claude -Baker, unit presi
dent, for an outstanding program
which will be announced later. At

leadership of Mrs. Irving Riegel,
department hospital chairman,
memorial poppies are being made
in large quantities. Proceeds from '
poppy sales, which take place just
prior to Memorial day, are used
exclusively to promote the child
welfare program of the Ameri
can Legion auxiliary. Urapqua
unit has ordered 2,500 poppies '
maae at tne local facility by dis
abled veterans. "Making the flow
ers which are worn in honor of
their fallen comrades helps the
disabled veterans pass tho long
winter hours in the hospital and
gives them remunerative work in
the workrooms," said Mi's. Riegel.
"We have ordered the poppies
for Umpqua unit early so that the
veterans may have employment
early in the year. Tho more pop
pies we distribute here on Poppy
day, the more work we can give
thc men and the more funds we
will have for our welfare activi
ties among families of veterans."
Members of the Lebanon unit
were joint hostesses with Umpqua
unit at the monthly birthday
party at the veterans' facility on
Wednesday afternoon. Games and
contests were enjoyed during the
recreation hours after which tiny

Prior to the part-, the Lebanon
women visited the child welfare
center in the Medical Arts build
ing, where Mrs. Ned Dixon, de
partment welfare chairman,
keeps official supplies for distri
bution. Umpqua unit and post are mak
ing special preparations for cele
bration of Army day on April 6.

country's entrance In the first
world war. Another event of In
terest Is thc official visit of Mrs.
Edith Brown, department finance
chairman, to Umpqua unit on
April 5.
