Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hoar and
small daughter and Ernest Hoar
came home from Portland Friday
after spending the holidays there
with relatives.
Hnrnnrd Denn is Quite ill at
Mercy hospital. A. W. Gellcr took
him to the'hospital Thursday aft
ernoon. Mrs. Denn took their two
daughters, Patty and Phyllis, to
Koseburp Sunday to take the bus
to Medford where they attend
the Catholic school. All three
visited Mr. Denn at the hospital
before the girls left for Medford.
They had spent the two weeks'
holiday vacation here with their
parents.
Vina Baldwin returned to the
school for the blind at Salem the
last ol the week, after spending
the holidays hero at the home of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Baldwin.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Martin
dale returned Friday from North
.Bend where they had been for
the past several days receiving
medical aid. Both Mr. and Mrs.
Martiiutale were very 111 with flu
before Christmas and did not re
cover satisfactorily.
S. H. Croy has returned from
a holiday visit with his daughters
in Marshfield.
Mm. T. G. lawson and son,
Donald, came home Friday from
n week's visit In Portland with
Mr. and Mrs. Gall Lawson and
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sklna. Mr.
and Mrs. Gall I-awson spent
Christmas at the Lawson home
here.
Miss Esther Brown has return
ed to her school work In Med
ford after sending the holidays
at the home of her mother, Mrs.
Ethel Brown.
K. W. Dick and son, Mark,
spent the week-end visiting rela
tives at Alleghany and Fairvlew,
' returning home Monday. Mark
had a two weeks' furlough from
his military duties at Fort Lewis.
Others of the Dick family who
spent a part of the holiday vaca
tion at the R. VV. Dick home were
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Coates and
daughter Helen, of Alleghany,
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Dick and
daughter, Jerrle Ellen, and Bruce
Hick of ScottRburg, and Mr. and
Mrs. Max Dick of Bend.
Fred ljtnge is back In the val
ley living at the home place.
Mrs. Charles Crouch and
daughter, Phyllis, returned the
last of the week from a two
weeks' visit with their son and
brother, Mclvln Crouch, and oth
er relatives at Oakland and other
California towns. "
Roy Vanderhoff of Gold moun
tain spent a few days In the val
ley greeting old friends during
the holidays.

piling with a Caterpillar tractor
across the highway from the W.
H. Eckles place. Piling is also be
ing taken out near the C. V.

The county bridge crew Is re
pairing the .bridge . near Dan
Smith's place. The road was
, closed to traffic Saturday hut

week.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Eckles
have been quite 111 with flu for

Mr. and Mrs.' Frank Brown
spent Saturday at coast points.
Miss Cora Kllen Markhain is
visiting her brother, Jack Mark
ham, and friends in l-os Angeles.
Mr. and Mrs. T. F. White and
daughter, Vilma, left last week
for their home In Nebraska. They
had been visiting in Washington
and later here since the first of
November. Their son and dniigh
erin law, Mr. and Mrs. V I Inter
White, went to Nebraska at the

Appointment of Attorney
Thomas C. Hartfiel of Roseburg
as Douglas county chairman for
the Oregon state 1941 drive
against infantile paralysis has
been announced by Dr. E. T. Hed
lund, of Portland, state chair
man. The drive, in honor of Presi
dent Roosevelt's birthday, Jan.
30, already is getting under way,
according to reports from state
headquarters. Numerous events
to raise funds for the "March of
Dimes" have been planned, in
cluding parties, sports events,
and birthday ba!l3. Residents of
the state also are being urged
to send 10-cent pieces directly to
ithe president at the white house.

headquarters..
One-half of the funds raised
during the campaign remain in
the communities in which they
are collected and the other half
is forwarded to the national
foundation for infantile paralysis
research.
