New Planing Mill
SUTHERLIN, Ore., Pec. 21.
Construction of a planing mill hero
is planned bv A. (irant Franklin,
Hrice Franklin. V. T. Hamilton
and A. C. Pelland, nil of -Mount
Vernon, Washington, according to
statements made by these gentle
men before Urn cily council at a
special meeting Tuesday night.
The meeting was held for the pur
pose of considering a location lor
the mill, which, according lo pres
ent plans, will bo situated on a
tract adjoining the railroad tracks
north of tlie stockyards. Tho
city-owned property will bo leased
for a period of three years witli
the privilege of renewal for a like
perioil of time. Some county
owned lots and railway siding pro
perty owned by I Do Wnard, also
is being considered in tho nego
tiations.
The company plans, the council
was informed, to obtain rough
lumber from mills operating with
in n 20 lo 30-mlle radius of Suth
erlin. It is expected lo employ
from 20 lo 2". men in tlm planing
mill when operations, are first he-
gun nml additional shifts will be

found available to provide longer
hours of operation. Tho present
plans cull for construction of three
buildings. As all machinery al
ready is available, it is expected

The Rnseliurg Junior high school
Papooses will open their basket
ball season here tonight wllh a
game against Marshfleld junior
high school. It will lie the first
game lor the players of each team
as this Is the first yenr that Marsh
field has had a Junior high, school
team, while no member of the
Roseburg team has had previous ex
perience.
Despite the fact that the Rose
burg team this year is composed
nf completely inexperienced ma
terial. Coach Hod Turner believes
he has a squad Hint will average up
well In competition, no reports.
Turner in past years has shown
much ability In developing beginner
talent. The present team at the
senior high school, expected to go
far in slate competition this year,
wns started as a unit In junior high
school nnd the plnyers havo been
together for the past four years.
Tonight's gnme, starting at 7:30
o'clock, is expected to furnish
plenty of excitement.
