DRIFTING SAND
Out on the desert
Where men seldom pass.
And the sand stretched away
Like a warped sheet of glass,
A tree stood waiting
As the wind rushed on,
Scorched and burning
And life near gone.
The sand drifted away
Till the roots hung bare.
Hut the beauty of a struggle
Was engraven there.

GOOD WILL TO MEN
By MA LIN DA ODKUKIR K
On that first Christmas ci nturles
ago,
Across the hills, beyond Judea'fl
plain
Three Wise Men waited, while the
moon hung low
Against a Mar-lit sky. Their eyes
would feiun
Have dosed in tdeep but for that
wondrous liL-bt
Ami that strange star. It seemed
to beckon them.
While angels sang the Glory Sntig
that ninht.
It led toward Mary's child In Heth-

A shadow hangs above our world
tonight.
As terror, hate and greed and lust
combine;
Rut while there still remains n
love for right
Of which that manger scene Is
yet a sign:
While It prevHils, there can be
laughter still.
And ChriKtmas cheer and to all
men good will.

tty MRS. CLACDR I1AKER
The glad season of the vear
when the spirit of the Christ Child
permeates our hearts, brings us
the rare privilege of rendering in
His name some special service to
our fellow men. Throughout all
the world no country, no people
are so blessed as ours.
On the day commemorating the
birth of the Prince of Peace, let
each of Us pledge ourselves anew
lo the cause of peace; pledge our
selves to work even more to keep
tho horrors of war from our
shores.
It is the wish or the American
Legion auxiliary at this Christmas
season to see, as we have in the
past, that no hospitalized veteran
is lonely, cheerless, or friend lesa
on the birthday of Him wiuise
love for his fellownien will nlwuys
be a truitling lit: lit on our path.
As we have'vlsited the hospitals
with our gifts, as we prepare the
baskets of food ami wrapped the
toys, indeed there was a bond of
brotherhood, n friendly and sym
pathetic helpfulness that has made
every task a joy and has brought
gladness to all who helped as well
as to those who will receive the
Christmas cheer. Something of
ourselves has gone into every
task. No one can work at such a
pace as those who at the child
welfare center have packed 70
baskets, sacked ,'i'0 sacka of can
dy, that many of nuts and chosen
gifts for each particular person
with as much love and care as for
our very own without having
piven of her own lovo ami
slrertRth.
At the veterans hospital Mrs.
Irvin Riecel and nurses, attend
ants and staff members have till
helped pack a bit of cheer Into
their package. Here, the men
have enjoyed the gift shop and
on Monday night will receive their
own Christmas. The government
ran care for their bodies but only
Individual giving and friendliness
