Interest In the murker ceremony
was first started here by Mrs. G. R.
Chilil, prominent San Frnnob
resident and for a number of years
one of Roseburg's most outstand
ing civic workers. A number of
local organizations took up the pro
ject ol contributing to the marker
fund and will take part in the cere
mony at the library park on Sun
day, September ill. Mi's. George M

have been acting as co-chairmen for
the ceremony, lo which the public
has been cordially invited to in
tend. Finis Dillard, one of tho Ilose
liurg's most prominent pioneers,
was present the day tlinl President
Hayes and his party visited here nt
the late Judge Willis residence,
(now the library building). Mr. Dil
lard reports that the entire coun
ty's population came to Roseburg
to celebrate the occasion. Presi
dent Hayes' visit hern sixty years
ago is the only visit a president of
the I'nited States has ever been
here overnight. Mrs. llelle Sheruiun
and Miss Lulu Wiilis. daughters
of the late Judge and Mrs. Willis,
are residents of this city and the
fornieivns home ut the time Presi
dent Hayes visited overnight here.
