Turkey Stampedes
Checked by Lights
One of the problems of the com
mercial turkey producer is to stop
the nightly stampedes. And nut al
ways is It ail e,any problem to
solve. Flocks vary in their tend
ency to stampede. Some birds will
scarcely ever leave, the roosts or
the bed grounds: others make
stampedes n nightly occurrence. I
I lie causes lor stampedes are
many; perhaps a stray eat, a wea
sel, a dog. a curlew. Turkeys are
about as flighty as a herd of rat
tle; like the cattle, the more they
stampede, the less it takes to
send them flying through the
nltiht.
' Lights seem to ho about the
only thing that will bold stum
. pedes in cheek. Where a roosting
corral is available and lights are
handy. It Is a quite simple mat
ter to hold down stampedea by
keeping a couple of lights burn
ing at night, right Horn the time
the birds are lirst put on range.
A. grower following this practice
claims he has not had a single
stampede ror two years.
Not everywhere are electric
lights available and In their place, I
ordinary road lights, these small '
round pots that construction ,
men burn at night to warn motor
ists of danger, make a satisfactory
substitute.. About four of these
road flares, put on opposite sides
of the flock alter they have bed
ded down, work satisfactory.
Lanterns are also quilt! widely us
ed and arc satisfactory. These
night lights serve the double pur
pose oi warning off vermin and
stopping these night stampedes.
The cost is negligible In compari
son to the savings in bruised and
Injured turkeys.
