The military training camps as
sociation, which drew up the draft
bill introduced by Senator Burke
(D-Neb. ), lists these as the mea
sure's "essential features:"
1. The registration of all male
cltlzeiiK and male aliens between
the ages of IS and fi'i, with certain
exceptions for in em hers of thej
army, navy, ttie national guard,
etc.
2. The dfvisi'in of the registrants
into two main categories: fa) Men
between 21 and 4.". who are liable
for eight months' military training
and for service: (hi Men between
IS and 21 and between 1.1 ami fF
who are liable for home defense
training and service in or near
their home communities.
:(. From the great pool formed
by registrants between 21 and 4a,
provision is made for the selection
by lot of men subject to training
and service, und for a careful selec
tive process from among these
men. whereby such numbers of men
as are required for the bind und
naval forces will he chosen for
training and service, having duo
regard Tor tbe need of industry
and agriculture, the status of the
registrant with respect to persons
dependent upon him and other fac
tors. Tbe provisions for registration'
and liability for training and ser
vice, which are sweeping In nature,
are to be carefully distinguished
from the provisions as to induction
lor training and service, which
would, in practice, be put into ef
fect with as little economic dis
ruption as possible.

Newsom pitched a capable game,
scattering seven hits and striking
out six. This performance was
shaded, however, by Harris and
Trotter, who held the powerful Tig
ers to exactly three hits.
The difference was simply that
two of Detroit's hits were home
runs by (ehrluger and Greenberg.
That's how victories are born, ,
sometimes at least. This one nar
rowed tbe gap on tbe Idle Cleve
land Indians to two games.
Another three-hitter last night
was Schumacher's performance
against the Phillies to give the
New York Giants a 7-0 shutout.
In the only other action in tbe
major leagues yesterday tbe Brook

Chicago's was a two-run homer by

teams will play a double-header
Sunday at Finlay field, John Col
lins, manager, announced ' today.
Coach Hod Turner announced the
signing today of Cordon Dyer,
.Myrtle Creek southpaw pitcher
and first baseman, who Is expect
ed to be a valuable addition to
the squad.
Applegate, the rangy Yonculla
lad, the number one pitcher for
the local Juniors, so far ban had
to bear the brunt of tbe pitching
duties, with Cox, also of Youcalla,
in relief roles. The addition of
Dyer to the souad is expected to
greatly strengthen the team In the
pitching and hitting departments.
Dyer will be able to piny only
this season, as he becomes 17
years of age In September.
The Hoseburg pluyers have ull
been certified for eligibility and
the team now is in readiness for
the opening of the elimination
series.
Under the tutelage of Coach
Turner, the squad has been mak
ing excellent progress and It Is
expected that t.he Indians will be
tbe team to beat In district com
petition.
3 Teams in This District
Roseburg, Medford and Marsh-
field will play for the district
title, with the winner to meet the
leading: team in the Lane-Liucoln-Benton
district. The winner of
the inter-district play-off will go
to the state championship play
off.
The district eliminations will
get under way next Sunday when
.Medford plays a single game ut
Marshfietd. July 4, tbe Marshfield
team will play a doubleheader at
Medlord. July 7. Hoseburg will
play a doubleheader at Marshfield
and on July 14 will play a single
ga me at Mod ford. Med lo rd will
play a doubleheadnr Ht Itoseburg
July 21, and a single game will
be played here with Marshfield
at some mid-week date, not yet
fixed. The game, however, will
be played prior to the 21st.
The district arrangement Is con
siderably different than has been
used heretofore, when straight
eliminations were played. Under
this year's schedule, each team
will play six games and three
games, one doubleheader and one
single game In each town, and tbe
winner will be determined by per
centage of wins over losses.
