THE SEER OF POUGHKEEPSIE
Ily ALDEN HARNESS
Note: Andrew Jackson Davis,
v.ho was born In 1826 and whose
works, soon after his death, were
published in thirty volumes, was
known as "The Seer of Pough-
Keepsie.
Radiating shining Soul-attractlnr
Which drew him to a higher ment
al sphere.
He lived the pure Christ-mind of
nmnlactlon
While he was in his mortal body
here.
From Splrlt-dcpllis he drew his
own conclusion
That events unborn could .be fore
told. He glimpsed a future age of vast
delusion
In which, like Valkyries of old.
Rushed military leaders here and
there
In some foreign lands through poi
soned air,
Making fiery speeches every
where. Till Watan's mighty thunders
shook the skies
And tho greatest war on earth did
rise.
God's eternal laws, which govern
ed and controlled
His mind and gave to him diviner
sight,
Enabled him to vividly behold
llcyoiKl the years of world-confusion,
Remaining Christian nations all
unite
And against dark paganism, mod
ern blight,
Ilravely wage n hard and long and
winning fight.
Then before him In bis deep se
clusion Vast changes of the future were
unrolled
In a world, where Progress did
enltsven
All human thought with such un
selfish love
That forever and forever from
above
To earth descended peace of
heaven.

Recruiting Aides
Formulate Plans
Full tact Strtnth Quota Of
123 Mm Sought for Local
Unit of National Guard.
Thn committee appointed at the
Inst meeting of ho American U
glnn to assist In recruiting for the
Roseburg company nf national
guard, met Inst night at the armory
to formulate plans. Tho local unit
has been below tho authorised ac
tive strength since. Mav,lst. and
never has had a complete nuotn of
men on the inactive rolls. The
mon on the Inactive list urn not re
quired to attend drill or field camp,
hut nro available for service If and
when the local unit Is called Into
ledernl service. At that time thev
would become active members of
the unit nnd would not havo to go
through the regular enlistment pro
cedure. They would also bo as
sured of, going Into federal service
with nn organised unit of men
they know, whereas If they wnlted
to volunteer after congress de
clares en emergency or until they
are drafted they, may bo assigned
lo a unit with men from other
Ftates who are cnmpletn strangers.
Seek Full Quota of 123
Tho committee was told by Cap
lain Robert L. Irving that tho ob
jective nf the local unit Is to main
tain nn active strength of S'i en
listed men, und inactive strength
of 41 enlisted men. This would In
sure tho unit . having Its peace
strength quota of 12:1 men In ovent
of a mobilization. It's permissible
lor Hie local unit lo carry an Inac
ilvo strength nf 111 men which
would nssuro mobilization nt thn
tegular war strength. - However,
this will not be attempted until the
Initial objective of 41 inactive en
listments is. completed. Enlist-
ments (or the inactive tint have
tho Game requirements as the ac
tive list, namely that .applicants
must be over 18 years of uge. with
out dependents nnd able to pass the
regular physical examinations.
Prior Service Not Required
Prior military service Ib not a
requirement. Members of the in
active national guard may transfer
lo the active list as vacancies oc
cur, nnd will bo given preference
In filling vacancies. Thn American
Legion commltteo believes, It was
sluled, that It Is highly Important
ill this time that t tin tuitions! guard
he kept at Ihe full authorised
strength and that sufficient men
be on tho Inactive rolls to fill the
units to full war strength.
Thn following Loglonnulres are
