Red Cross Pleads
For More Funds
An appeal for Immediate volun
tary contributions to the Hed Cross
war relief fund wub tuude today
by Mrs. Kllen Post, executive sec
retary of the Douglas county chap
ter, who reported that the chap
ter still is far short of its minimum
ijuota of $1,000 and at the same
time is being pressed lo double
that amount.
Collections to date, she reports,
amount to $322.0.1.
A telegram received from no
tional headquarters reads as fol
lows :
"When the American Red Cross
asked a minimum war relief fund
of ten million dollars no one could
forsee that In two short weeks the
greatest tragedy In all history
would be unfolded. It is impos
sible to describe the pitiful plight
of millions of refugees In France.
I he sick, wounded, hungry and
homeless cry out to us for help.
We will need much more than ten
million dollars. Therefore, ouoias
originally assigned should be re
garded only us minimum, immedi
ate objectives. Chnplers should
then go on' and, where possible,
double their quotas. In fact, the
on iy limitation should be the maxi
mum generosity of the American
people. We should complete this
campaign within the shortest pos
sible time."
Mrs. I'ost urges that Douglas
county residents make voluntary'
contributions immediately. Money I
may be left at any newspaper of
fice in the county, or wiih K. S.I
McClain at the Itoseburg brunch I
of the I'. H. National bank, or may!
be limited to chapter headquarters '
at the court house In Itoseburg. i

This simile comes out of a land
where tho year is divided be
tween a rainy season and a
dry season and where tlrougliia
caused by the failure of the
rains are fi-Hoiiem ami dovust
ing. In tho dry season the
grass dries up and a crop not
ready to harvest is ruined.
This hapH?ns each year. Occa
sionally, however, the rain
falls anil again It falls, not
only then Is there no grass and
no nop. but the trees that are
touched hy the dry season lieut
"o fruit and cast their leuves.
Not so, however. Is the tree
growing on the banks of a rlv
er with lis unfailing supply of
water keeps its foliage and
hears fruil In spile of drought.
The man who draws life from

cheerful In health, but how
shall one smile mid love und
sing throuuh years of suffering
mill limitation unless he drinks
from (he River of Life. .Most
anyone can return thanks to
Hod over n boiinlil'ul table but
how can one have in his heart
genuine gratitude for n crust
unless he is nourished with the
bread of eternal life. We can
only endure through 1 li in. who
hath loved us. and given Ills

Seattle Outhit But
Beats Hollywood
(Hy the Associated Press)
Seattle's seat at the head of the
Pacific Coast baseball league pa
rade was a bit more secure today
In further proof that while base
hits help a lot in the gamo, the
payoff Is made strictly on the busis
of runs across the plate.
The Hollywood Stars garnered
12 hits while the ftainlers wore col
lecting only 9 in their game last
night, but Seattle won the contest,
6-2.
The Stars loaded the liases five
times In four Innings, but failure to
bit at the critical moments result
ed in is players being stranded on
Ihe pads. Tate, Seattle rlghthund
er, twice fanned a butter lor the
third out when the bases were full.
The league's second place Oak
land Oaks punched tho cellar-dwelling
Portland Heavers groggy with
23 hits uml au 1S-2 victory.
Los Angeles overcame San
Diegoa 5-4 lead hi the seventh
inning with a four-run rally which
