We ran Into winter before we
reached Omuha and caught up with
a good old winter bll.ard In Chi
cago. We had planned lo stop over
a day In Chicago but were unpre
pared for the weather so hasLeued
on.
Stopping In Washington, I). (!..
where, bucause It Is pretty well
south, we expected some modera
tion, wf? found tho weatherman do
ing his tricks also. It was unusually
cold wjth a rrecwlng biting wind
that was most unpleasant.
On up to New York City we
wero prepared for anything. Ily tho
ttmo we were settled In a hotel u
blizzard had kicked up Its heels all
over Manhattan. Tho KlreeU and
sidewalks were slushy. It was win
ter there, ii nd no mistake.
Kverywhere, we were most cour
teously assured by taxi drivers
such neather was MOST unmmal.
Unusual or mil. It "warn't the way
we beared it" we knew that It
Was spring and balmy back here
where we came from.
Our first plan which was to
hurry bark home from Detroit over
1'. S. highway yo was discarded
even before wo reached Cheyenne
too much snow, though the high
way was clear. Sw w hen wu came
back to Detroit (via train) we had
determined to head south at
least Tar enough to reach early
spring weather again. As wo head
ed south, studying maps our com
promise decision vvas to return via
D. S. titt across southern Missouri.
Ok lahoma, the nort hern I Ip of
Texas, New Mexico and Arizona
into southern California. It was n
perfect decision so far as weal her
was concerned -in fact it was per
feet in every way.
It was early spring by the time
we reached St. Louis and by the
lime southern Calitorniu came
along it was nearly summer. The
overcoat was discarded somewhere
in Oklahoma and has ben unused
since.
This Is a great, and marvelous
country of ours where we ran en

Florida, which didn't reach this

New Orleans, which Is well down
in the sub-tropics, being much
further south than Hun Diego, the
temperature stood at ten above for
a week and a half. In Baton Rouge,
a few miles to the north, it was
five above. Streams froze that
hadn't been skimmed with Ice
within the memory of the oldest
inhabitant.
Hananu trees (without bananas;
it's too far north for that) wore
frozen flat to the ground. The
palms look as dry its hay. All ten
