General Drill retailed his report;

Outside there was orderly com
motion. Troops were pouring out
of barracks and bivouac camps al

were whirring out of the-fort, rubber-tired
artillery was shilling Its
light and medium caution out of the
zone of possible danger.
The aiurni had spread Into Sun

broadcasting the report of planes
on the way up . from the Rio
(jraude. People 1 were cautioned
not to display lights, to avoid
hunching Up In crowds ft) event
un ulr attack developed. At the
sume lime, the broadcaster reas
sured them that the flight, of- air
craft might not have hostile pur
poses. ,'
An aide; whom General Drill had
sent out Into the garrison to ob
serve, burst into headquarters,
breathless, hie face stripped of
color,
'Sir, airplanes" he panto;!. "Fly
ing high you you can hear them
coming!"
General Drill left his staff at

was dark, headquarters worked
behind drawn shades.
The roar of motors filled the air
as trucks and artillery continued to
roll out of the garrison. Rut above
that he caught the sharp whine of
high-powered engines far over
head. The 69th antiaircraft artillery
had got its fcuns In position, but
was withholding its searchlights
pending development. Suddenly a
small plane zoomed down over the
garrison and dropped a flaro that
turned night into duy.
Drill . stood, calmly observing.
He knew that flare was the first
violence of an invasion of the
I'nlted States. He knew that In
ti few minutes I ho bombers would
circle over their target of Fort
Houston and let drive. He knew,
too, that there was nothing he
could do to prevent what was to
follow.
A hissing shriek caught Ills ears.
Involuntarily he raised himself ou
his Ines and planed his finger-tips
at his ears. A savage flash of yel
low flame leaped from the earth
Into the heavens. The ground un
der him shook with volcanic in
tensity from the savage wrath of
a heavy bomb.
Long fingers of light leaped In
to the sky from the liJHh's search
lights. Another bomb detonated,
:hifi time In the field from which
the trucks were whirring. Brill
caught. In the momentary flash of
light, the grim ti-agedy of shatter
ed men and material. Above the
din he heard the cries of wound
ed men. Another bomb crashed
and another. HJb antiaircraft re
handful of guns were almost lost
In the din of titanic thunder that
crashed from the sky.
