APPLES SAID TO
Lead Poisoning Held Avert
ed by Eating Apples,
Tests Reveal.
lly HOWAltn W. HLAKSLKE
AneiiitMl Pros Science Editor
PK1JAXA. 111., Aug. 21. Apples
are a partial protection against
lead pois'Hiiijg.
I he discovery was reiKirted re
cently from the VnlVHislty of Illi
nois college of agriculture, as a re
sult of studies of sprays containing
lead, used ti save apple crops from
ruin by coddling-moths. Ir. Shields
conlucled the work.
Apple growers have contended
that regardless of theories and of
ronie tests, the lead remaining on
apples after spraying was not harm
ful to buuiuns. Most lead poison
ing studies were based on the metf.l
laken -in drinking water, and the
Illinois scientists set out to learn
whether the effects might be dif
fereait If the lead was taken with
food.
They discovered white rats, whpn
ted dried apple powder along wflh
lead, retained much less lead than
when on a diet not containing ai
ple powder. The greatest reduc
tion was about 50 per cent. The
retained lead is so far as known
the only harmful part of this metal.
It deposits in hones and some other
ir. Mitchell said the protective
pubstance in apples is believed to
be pectin. This is the "Jell" stuff
in Jelly. The pectin apparently
combines with the lend to form an
insoluble compound, which the
Ixtdy merely excretes.
The Illinois experiments also
have shown young rats store lead
in their hones more rapidly than
Hdnlts. It is believed this applies to
human brings. Diets completely
free from lead and now being tried
on rats at lllimls. Humans pro
bably never get a lead-free diet.
The metal Is frequently a natural
part oi piams. n ih "
added n fond manufacture, by dis-.
solved lead from utensils.
To date no advantage has been
found at Illinois in a diet contain
ing practically no lead. Neither
have any .benefits been found, it
was suspected Treedom rrom added
lead might lengthen the life of
white rats, but this proved untrue.
The amount of lead permissible
tn food Is regulated by the food and
drug administration ot the t . :-v
department of agriculture. t.asi
year the limit ot leau on .appu;
was raised from .01S to .i.25 grains
per pound on this fruit.
