The threatening curse of this
ajje Is lis shallowness with re
gard to things fundamental.
This is not true ot the material
world when we build skyscrap
ers, or railroads, or bridges. Hut
we face that danger continuous
ly when we turn to matters of
the soul. The practice of ven
eering Is by do means confined
to woodwork. It Is employed
everywhere. This error Is far
too prevalent In our religious
life. Our conceptions of church
membership lack depth. Ureal
oak trees never grow In shallow
soil. Great buildings never stand
on surface foundations. Great
civilizations are not reared on
sentiment or caprice. It Is not
otherwise in the 'building of
great Christian characters. They
must bo established on the Rock
Christ Jesus and not. on the
shifting sand of conventional
morality. On the sayings of Je
sus, and not on the futile theor
ies of men. Building; thus Is our
only assurance of stability and
permanence in the midst of
life's temptation. It Is our
only hope when wo come lo
stand face to face with death.
Our Father, Thou hast the
words of Eternal life, teach us
the high and holy wisdom of
walking in Thy way. Aineii.
