las County Public Health associa
tion was held In the basement of
the .Methodist chUrch Tuesday eve
ning, June 6. A potluck dinner was
served to approximately 60 people,
members being present from Look

logg, in addition to Roseburg.
The president of the association,

speakor of the evening. Dr. net
linger spoke of tuberculosis being;
a peculiarly treacherous and insid
ious disease, being known since
earliest history. It, like yellow fe
ver, could he completely stamped
out. There have been tremendous
reductions In the prevalence of
(communicable disoase in the last
twenty years. For instance, typhoid
has been reduced !lu per cent, diph
ithcria 87 per cent, and tuben:
per cent, and tuberculosis
70 per cent. The prevalence of tub-
nrculoKts varies according to the
sanitary condition) and commun
ity intelligence. There are GtH)
cases per 100,000 in China, with less
than bo in the united States, and
jn oreson, less than 35.
Dr. Bellinger stated that tuber
culosis definitely depends on con
tact. The basic thing in any com
munity in the control of tubercu
los is is a know let) ge of who t h a
cases are. Six to ten times as many
people who are in contact with
known cases develop the disease as
others in the community. People
should be educated to appreciate
the benefit of an annual thorough
examination.

jray. It was requested that the par
ents also be examined. The mo
ther was thin and tired looking,
while the father was apparently
well and working hard. Upon exam
ination. It was found that the mo-

father had the germs in his sputum.

a positive reaction to the tubercu
lin teat in May and her x-ray show
ed some infection. She was so ap
parently free from Illness that tho
advice of Ihe physician was not fol
lowed ami ahe continued her active
iife. In December she began to
cough, lose weight, and to have all
the symptoms of tuberculosis. An
x-ray taken at this time showed ten
times the original spread of disease
and immediate hospitalization was
necessary. However, this story
had a happy ending, as she is now
back home living a normal life. An
arrested case is usunlly permanetly
arrested if the patient cooperates
fully. Whooping cough and tuca-sles,
though they do not, of course, cause
tuberculosis, may give rise to such
condition that the disease, which
was under control, becomes active.
In another case mentioned It was
twenty-eight months after the film
showed definite changes before the
patient began to show any aymp
toms of disease. Many times earlv
attacks of tuberculosis are so brief
that they go unrecognized. A tuber
culin test indicates whether a per
son might have picked up some In-
lecimn. and ir ho. an x-rav must
follow to determine the extent. No
