strenuously to the change; even

objections from the lumber and
grazing people of the west. All that
was actually proposed at that time
was the changing of the name of Hie
interior department to the depart
ment or conservation; but it was
taken for granted that if this bap
p ned it would be followed by
trunsfer of the forest service, and
although the name-changing bill
passed the senate, it was allowed
to die in the house.
Complicating the proposition is
t lo lact that some of the sharpest
rivalry in the whole government
service Is that which exists be
tween the forest service and the
national park service of the inter
ior department.
As the names iiuplv, forest ser
vice has charge of the national for-
i ts and park service has charge of
the national parks. Practically all

have permits to use these resources
in the national forests fear that if
the transfer is made, the same Rort
of rules which now govern the na
tional parks will eventually govern

and that the water resources will
be withdrawn from public use. Nat
urally enough, they are pretty
strongly opposed to the change.

Nor does the forest service likej

to the rangers and fire-fighters out
in the field. Consequently when

sure is put on congress to prevent
