FINE MEETING
YONCALLA. Jan. 11. The New
Year's meeting of Yoncalla Wom
an's Study club was lielri January
7th at the home of Mrs. Hugh
Warner. Mrs. Leon a Merk assist
ing. During the dessert luncheon
served at two o'clock, the following
five-minute talks were given;
Health, from the Ereimirus Lily,
Mrs. C. W. Peart; Fashions, Mis.
Lloyd Pinkston; book talk. Savage
Symphony, by Mrs. Eva Lipps, Mrs.
Henry Payne; International Rela
tions, Mrs. Karl Strong; New
Year Thoughts, Mrs. J. H. Witt
meyer; travels, Taj Mahal, Mrs.
Karl Brant; the better speech les
son was conducted by .Mrs. Harvey
Coekeram. The 15-mfnute talk was
given by Mrs. Dare , Kingery, her
chosen subject being "The Dan
gers of Kducation," by Henry C.
Link. During the business session
the club voted to join the Oregon
Roadside council, also to donate a
substantial amount to the Yoncalla
public library, which with the
amount realized on the club qu!?t
will enable the library to purchase
almost $(50,00 worth of new books,
which will be on the shelves of the
library within the next two weeks.
A significant feature of this
, meeting was the attendance of Mrs.
J. R. Lasswell, who on account- of
illness has not been able to attend
the club meetings since October
15th, also Mrs. Ziuiie Bishop, who
has been sojourning in Portland
since November.
The next meeting of the club will
be a silver tea, to be held in the
parlors of the Community church,
January 21st, for the purpose of
raising money for the several phil
anthropic projects in which the

GLENDALE, Jan. 11. Mr. and
Mrs. Francis N'elson were hosts at
a lovely dinner at the Glendale ho
tel on Wednesday evening: The ta
ble was set with white linen, a
miniature snow scene forming the
centerpiece. Dainty favors were
placed for each guest. Covers

After the dinner, an evening of
contract bridge nnd pinochle was
enjoyed at the Nelson home. At
contract, Mrs. Henninger held high
score for the ladles and Dr. Faw
cett for the men, while Mr. Harvey
was high scorer at the pinochle ta

Belden was hostess for the Satur
day lirldge club Jan. 7 at her home
near town. A dainty luncheon was
served to the guests at one o'clock
and the afternoon hours spent at
play. Those present to enjoy the

day afternoon. The devotional ex
ercises were led by Mrs. Grant,
president. After the business ses
sion the members and guests spent
the afternoon sewing nnd visiting.
Seventeen were present. Refresh
ments were served at four o'clock.
The next meeting will be at the
home of Mrs. John Woods.

INTERESTING MEETING
Members of the Girls' League of
the Roseburg senior htKh school
were entertained as well as inspired
when the council members gave In
teresting talks on the theme, "Self-
Improvement," at the regular meet-
itiK held In the study hall during
the activitv period Tuesday. Faith
i oung based her talk on tue uiea
of self improvement through good
speech. She gave the most desira
ble Qualities of good speech and
told how these might be acquired
Jean Ritchie's talk was upon
Friends" and how members might
improve themselves. Virginia Young
gave on entertaining nnd descrip
tive talk on self improvement
through dependability. Her Illus
trations were quite appropriate and
to the point concerning the high
school student. Shirley Dusseau
had as her topic, "Recreation as a
means of self Improvement." Shir
ley gave a descriptive talk on the
ideal girl with an ull around per
sonality. Corlnne Harphnm based
her talk on self improvement
through reading and spoke of the
books which could be put to best
use In the case of a high school
student who was looking for a wuy
of self Improvement. Also on the
Girls' League program wns a solo
by Betty Marstera, accompnnied by
Florence Hamilton, nnd two piano
solos played by Rette Owen. Rob
Irishman presented the girls league
with a gilt for the girls' room In
annreciation for the football ban
quet given by the league every
year for the boys.

PRACTICE FRIDAY
Mrs. Homer Grow, director of
the Roseburg Woman's Choral
club, has announced that the club
will resume its weekly practice
meetings Frldny morning, Jnnuary
13, at ten o'clock at the Woman's
clubhouse, following the holiday
vacation weeks.
The club hns been asked to sing
at a number of affairs in tho near
future, the first of which will be
at the Rose school building dedi
cation program next Monday night.
The club will sing "Luxembourg
Gardens," by Raldwiu; "Japanese
Sunset, by Deppin, and "Estrel
lita," by Ponce. All members are
