Dr. C. D. Elgin, who located a
nickel claim in a gulch drained by
Poverty creek.
After Dr. Elgin's death, Harri
son found the claim again in liloO
largely because he recalled the
presence of a hard, heavy stone,
rich In nickel ore. He sent a speci
men to Dr. J. F. Diliar, federal
geologist, who urged bim to send
the ' whole rock, undoubtedly a me
teor, to the Smithsonian museum.
The miner, who estimated the
rock was buried deeply In the
ground and weighed 15 or 20 tons,
said he was offered no financial
assistance and promptly forgot the
proposal. His interest in the rock
was revived by publicity ::bout
tiie meteor last winter.
Harrison said the rock was
nboul one and a quarter miles
from the U. S. Chromium, Inc.,
camp. It is about 30 or 40 miles
southeast of Port Orford and about
12 miles from Powers and five
mllea from the forest service road
at China flats.
The rock apparently sliced
through Bald knob and descended
into the gulch where the years
have covered It with undergrowth.
