Sport Still Possible for
Few Days at Red Butte
Site, Trio Learns.

Maynard Bell, trekked to the sum.
mit of Red Butte, proposed winter
sports playground area, and spent
the entire day enjoying uluiost per
fect Bitting conditions
. The purpose of the late-season
trip was to make final enow meat,
urements for the year. An ac
curate record on the amount of
snowfall In the area has been
kept this past winter by the local
forestry office to-be used In de
termining the feasibility of estab
lishing a winter sports playground
in that sector. The skiing party
was highly encouraged by the
amount of snow still on the
ground from Watson's cabin to the
summit. Enough snow remains at
Watson's cabin to afford skiing, to
a limited extont, for the next few
days. More than 4 feet of old snow
was found on the northern slopes
and on the summit of Hcil Dutte,
but the warm weather of the past
week Is rapidly melting winter's
last vestige.
Tree Blockade Removed
The trio journeyed to within a
mile of Wutson's cabin by nuto. No
difficulty was encountered in mak
ing tho trip other than the task of
removing several trees Which had
fallen across1 the road.' Several
huge trees In one jam, effectively
barring further travel by auto,
forced the party to make the rcsf
of the way on foot. Skiing snow
was found approximately a mile
from the summit.
The skiers reached tho lookout
station at noon and consumed tho
rest of the dny skillng on the near-'
by slopes. A side-trip was taken
by Goorgo Churchill to Peter and
Paul prairie on the northeastern
slopes of lied Butte, nbout a mile
and a halt from the summit, for
the purpose of investigating new
skiing terrain. Churchill reported
an excellent area available, offer
ing to the advanced skier and
more venturesome some of the
finest cross country and slalom
slopes yet discovered. More than
5 reet of fairly fast "corn" snow
covered tho entire area. ,
3-Mlle Hike "Required
Barring wet weather today or
tomorrow which would make the
road impossible to travel, excel
lent skiing can be found lit the
vicinity of Hod Butte summit and
Peter and Paul prairie. Good ski
ing snow will probably bo avail
able for a week or more, depend
ing upon weather conditions. To

that locality over the week-end
should not attempt the drive from
the Little river road unless exper

Chains are not necessary. The en
tiro group of skiers returned with
beautiful sunburns, and It tho
weather conlinues to hold clear
and warm, precautionary meas
ures should bo taken.
