THE elrt-UB waa good. I've hardly
evar seen one that I thought
was anything else. If the actors and
performers aien t
so hot, I look at
the animals. It
nothing Is good,
then I fall back
on my sense of
smell, and relish
the odors ot
crushed grass,
sawdust and, er,
other, more or
less gamey odors.
After seeing
those Chinese ac
robats last night, I can understand
how the Japs are having such a
hard time conquering that coun
try. It must bo exceedingly hard to
put a finger on people as active as
these exponents of the race were.
If they could only learn to tie the
Japs In as many knots as they tied
themselves, they'd have 'em.
After the circus wrb over, a
party of us sat In our car and
watched the striking of the big
tent. It didn't take those rousta
bouts long to take It down! Zip,
zip, everything went with swift
precision, and the tlfst thing we
know the dffforent sections of can
vas were all rolled up and hoisted
fn the wagons. The big poles
were lowered so easily and grace
fully It looked like child's play,
but wasn't.
Couldn't afford to go home and
to bed after that, so we went down
to the depot and watched 'em load
the wagons on the cars. Last night
that S. P. depot came to life! You'll
never realize that we had only two
passenger trainB through here a
day the sight took one right .back
to old times, like we used to 'have
when Bryan would stop for a plat
form address, or a visiting delega
tion of Elks would come with their
bands; when Itoseburg was proud
ot Its rail facilities although it
came later not to patronize them
much, and kind of starved 'em out.
At the loading last night the in
terest seemed to center in the
horses. There were about 175 work
horses with the clrcuB, (exclusive
o! the performing ones) and the
biggest and best pullers of these
were used to draw the big and
heavily loaded wagons from the
street to the waiting railroad cars.
You all know ot Lady Godiva,
the gal who in ancient times had
the modern Idea of securing pub
licity, any kind of publicity, at any
price. Being more or less of a pio
neer in this practice, the best Bhe
could think of was to ride down
tho street on a horse, clothed In
nothing but her long waving
tresses, nnd a winsome smile. The
stunt being new, she got her pub
licity. Also you've heard of the man
. Btonding on what passed for a side
walk In those days, taking in the
performance with bulging eyes.
Finally he couldn't contain his ad
miration and enthusiasm any
longer. "My G !" he shouted,
"what a swell home!"
I think that Is the reactfon
which would havo been evident in
the crowd of several hundred men
and women watching tho loading
operations last night, if Uodlva
had of been riding the hoi'Bes
there. Everyone's eyes wore on
those great animals pulling the
wagons up the steep ramp to the
waiting cars. Vnst horses weighing
upwards of a ton apiece, many of
them. Farmers in the crowd fair
ly watered at the mouth they want
ed them so badly, and some of the
city horse lovers were sorely
tempted to buy some like them (if
they could find 'em) and pasture
them In their back yards,
1 hope tho circus comes again:
I reckon It will. It always has. The
future would be a drah thing in
deed to look forward to, if we
knew there would never bo anothor
circus.
