POETS CORNER
IF TIME WERE ONLY A ROSE
By G. M. LEEPER
If we could gather time
The way we pluck a flower,
And gather only sunshine
From each passing hour,
And place them in our heart
Like flowers In a vase,
Their fragrance thoro I'm sure
Would reflect upon' our face,
Flowers In the vase .
And sunshine In our heart,
Gathering time like roses
As the days depnrt.
Gathering lime like flowers'
Through the hours of the day,
Keep the roses in our heart
And throw- tho weeds away.
IT time were only a flower
And there weren't any weeds,
Our feet would not get tangled
With .our worries, and our needs,
If time were only a vine
That we could train above our
door.
And let the morning sun
Cast their shadows on our floor.
If time were only a tree
So proud, so grand and tall,
We might rest a bit
Down where the shadows fall,
i
If time were only a rose
And each minute an hour,
We would gather a million fancies
From a summer shower.
If time were only a river
That knows its way to go,
We might float In the moonlight
uown wncre tne rusnes grow.
I
If time were like the morning
And dnys like flowers grow,
We might drift to heaven
Or bring It here below.
If time were only a rose,
And heaven, a flower,
I would build a wall about them
And rest beneath the bower.

SKIING SITE EYED
BY LOCAL DEVOTEES
Area in Red Butte Sector
Found Well Adapted to
Snow Sport Need.
Four members of Roseburg's new
ski club celebrated the first day
of spring In six feet of snow only
37 miles from town.
George Churchill, Hugh Whip-
Pie, tan aiurpny and Maynaro Rell
spent yesterduy skiing over the
snow-covered terrain on the north
ern slopes of Red Butte, promised
sue for the new ski club and win
ter sports area.
. The difficult trip was made for
the purpose of taking snow meas
urements nt Watson's cabin and
Ked Butte summit nnd to survey
the surrounding territory to deter
mine the amount of work .neces
sary to convert the Watson cahln
area into, suitable skiing country.
Conditions found there far exceed
ed expectations. The snow storm
which has been raging over most
or Oregon s mountnfnous country
the past week has deposited more
tnnn two feet of fresh, drv nowder
snow on ton of four feet iof Qid
snow. On the hike Into the area
more than a foot of snow was
encountered within two miles of
Little river.
Good Site Assured
-The four memhers were enthus
iastic over the snow conditions, in
the entire area. According to avail
able records, this has been an ave
rage winter, so it is without doubt
that RoBeburg s skiing enthusiasts
can be certain of ideal skiing con
ditions from early December to
late In Aorll. With very littte ef
fort on the part of the organiza
tion the Watsnn cabin area can he
converted Into an excellent ski
grounds with suitable terrain close
at hand to suit everv type of ekler
from the novice to the advanced.
Tho new organization, which had
Its inception and birth only a few
weeks ngo. Is working earnestly to
Interest Roseburg and Douglas
county in the newest of crazes,
skiing, which has . swept the
length nnd breadth of this country
in two short years. It Is the hope
of the group that every civic or
ganization In the city will get be
hind tho new project to provide a
winter sports plaveronnd for this
locality. Though Roseburg is far
behind other communities In pro
viding suitable fnctltftes for this
new sport, they are more fortunate
than the other cities by having
such a fine area so close to the
centers of population.
n -Tim new nkt nluh Is emlonvm-hiGr
lo cniisi me it'll ui me iiin-Mi hui v-
te'e in promoting, developing nnd
maintaining this winter ' play
ground since the proposed slto
rests , within the ' bounds of th'e
Umpqua national forest. A forest
service road already reaches, the
site of the proposed sports area,
hut unfortunately It Is a nummoi

ing tho wlntor except for the first
mile. With a winter surface It Is
easily possible lo drive from Rose
burg to tho henrt of the forest anil
more than five feet of snow In
