Increased Winter Feeding
Indicated; Better Grade
Beef to be Marketed.
The cuttle market now shows
signs of Home stability following
the sharp decline In prices of the
better grade cattle In November
and December, the bureau of agri
cultural economics said in its
current report on the beef cattle
situation.
A large part of the downward
readjustment in prices which was
expected for the neiter grades of
cattle in the first hair of 1U38 al
ready seems to have taken place.
Not much change is expected in
prices of slaughter cows and the
lower grade of steers. Tho in
fluence of reduced supplies on
prices of such cattle may be off
set by a weakness in the consum
er demand for meats, the bureau
said.
In the 11 .western states there
are slightly fewer cattle on feed
this winter than last.
Slaughter to Be Smaller
The slaughter of both cattle and
calves iu IbliS is expected to be
smaller than it was lust year. In
those areas where cattle numbers
have been reduced In recent years
because of 'drought. It is expected
that1 some restocking will he done
which will result in fewer cows,
heifers and calves coming to
slaughter. '
Feed is plentiful this year and
this is expected to hu reflected in
heavier weights of cattle going to
market. This will offset in part
the decrease iu mini hers slaugh
tered. It Is expected, therefore,
that total beef supplies this year
will be nearly as large as last
and will include a larger propor
tion of beef of the belter grades.
One of the main causes lor the
drop In livestock prices since Sep
tember has been the unusually large
increase iu supplies of hogs com
ing to market.. After reaching the
lowest level in more than 40 years
iu August, bog slaughter increased
until iu December it was running
about 2& times larger than In Au
gust, Average weights of hogs in
tho last two or three iiion.ts also
have been heavier than usual for
this time of year. . Iu addition, the
weak storage demand Jor hog pro
ducts in November and December
forced, unusually large quantities
of pork, into consumption chan
nels. . . prices Expected to Rise
Some advance in hog prices in
the next few months is foreseen

Another price-strengtbenins fac
