Opening the hoop season with a
barrage of baskets, major and
minor ((ufntets swung into action on
every front last week-end. Up to
the first of January activity was
limited lo a few minor skirmishes
with indecisive resuTiS which serv
ed the purpose of focusing atten
tion on the coining easaua sport,
but now with every teuw in the
country K't'led and ready for ac
I ion. followers of the game of bas
ketball will have their ill before
the season comes to an end In
March. ATter the first flurry of ex
citement has died down, the paying
customers will settle back into
their seats and watch with bated
breath an the teams battle tt out
and head down the home stretch in
the many conference dud district
races.
On our own locul front there was
pinny of action but no victories
Tie Indians made a forced inarch
to the lair of the North Mend Hull
dog and came back on the short
end of the score, :io to 25, to open
the conference season. This week
end, January H uml la, Hoscburg
basketball lovers will see both the
Indians ami Papooses in their first
home appearance. On Friday, Jim
Watts' Indians take on a very tough
foe, Myrtle Point, on the local court,
in what will probably be about the
touuhest game of the season. The
flobi-ats opened their season last
Friday with a victory over Marsh
field, 23 to 12. Couch Rlckard's
squad is composed of five letter
men and a host, of reserves, and
beyond a doubt is one of the tough
est teams In the league. The local
hoopsters are out to surprise the
visitors and are working hard for
a victory.
On Saturday night, the funs of
the city will get a second treat.

been putting his sipiad through a
vigorous early season training and
the team is anxious to swing Into
action against any worthy oppon-

first sacrifice. Win, lose or draw,
the cave lads are in lor a "HRi"
evening hi more ways than one.
Saturday evening's game will in
troduce to the public one of the
tallest junior high teams in the
country. At center will be "Flag

at forward will be "String Hen if
