"SMELLEfJ" TO TEST
Chemical Substitute for
Cop's Nose Will Petect
Alcohol's Presence.
KANSAS CITY, Oct. 12. (A F)
How much whiskey makes an
unsafe driver?
Two jiggers.
in-. Hollo N. Harger. biochemis
try piofessor at Indiana university,
gave that estimate to the Nation
al Safety congress today, IiusmI on
studies made with a "chemical
breath smeller" with which he
hopes to replitce ihe policeman'
nose as a test lor intoxication.
Three ouncea of whiskey or a
little less than two jiggers is
enough to make the average mo
torist u peril to traffic, Or. Hai
gcr said.
IiiscussitiK the "chemical breath
smeller." J Jr. Harger said it can
detect the small amount of alco
hol present in a single glass of
beer.
"The policeman's nose for
bcoze," he said, "is frequently un
fair, though commonly accepted
as evidence in court. In reality
the odor of the breath of one who
has been iinbibingis due more to
Ihe flavoring mutter of tho, liquor
rather than the small amount of
alcohol."
Hut the "chemical breath .smell
er" cun t be fooled.
"No larger than the ordinary
cam era, the scientific breath
smeller used in the testa has as
its nose u sensiiive chemical re
agent," he explained. "The fluid,
normally a healthy pink color, is
unaffected by onion or garlic
bur pales at the slightest sugges
tion of alcohol on the driver's
breath."
The degree with which the fluid
pales is the give-away ' on how
much drinking ihe breather has
been up to.
