EX-SENATOR FESS'
OF OHIO PASSES
(Continued from page 1)
a boy, had to struggle for coun
try schooling.
Untiling against odtis at all
times, he won his way to Ohio
Northern university at Ada, O. He
worked his way there and gradu
ated with honors in ISSJi. The fact
that he was 27 years old before
he finished college testified to the
bitterness of his struggle.
Inured to his lot by this time
and wishing to be a teacher. Fess
continued his studies. In 1SH he
earned a master's degree. Later he
was given LL.B. and LL.D. de
crees. Thus fortified seholasti-
fcally, Fess went to the University
ot Chicago as a student lecturer.
He returned to his alma mater
as vice-president and a few years
lar, in 1907. reached the height
of his educational career by being
elected president of Antioch col
lege at Yellow Springs, O., a school
noted for its system of combining
class room work eltii practical
application of stuares in shops,
mills and stores.
After six years at Antioch. Fess
felt the urge for a public career.
He had taken part in the Ohio con
stitutional convention when. In
1S13, he ran for congress and was
elected his first term in the na
tional house. He continued there
until his election to! the senate in
1322. . i.J H ... - i
He won then by 50.6R1 voles.
His 192S majority was 50S.853.
bought New Deal
Defeat came to Fess, an out
spoken critic of the Roosevelt
newdeal," when he souuht his
third term in 1934. Vic Donabev
coming out of political refirement
after three terms as governor of
Ohio, won n three-comeieQlomo-
to lake Fess chair in the senate.
Fes) blamed his defeat on the
agricultural adjustment admini
stration and the home owners'
loan corporation, sections of the
"new deal." He accused the first
of Influencing the farm it e
through benefit payments, the sec
ond of winning small home own-
era votog through ttc mnrfnii-i nr-
jjjgi
tivltles. He was irarticularli' bU
ter toward the AAA.
"Some of my farmer friends,
he said, "frankly told me they
could not bite the hand that fed
them benefit cheeks. They had
voted for me for years."
The night before the count of
voles showed him defeated, Fess
made a statement which epitomiz
ed his attitude toward political
fortunes. He said:
"Come thunderstorm, war or el
ection, I always go to bed at 9:30
sharp,"
As a public officer Fess was an
anient supporter of national pro
hibition. He also championed wo
men's rights, advocated anti-child
labor legislation and laws for
workmen's compensation, work
men's Insurance, an eight hour
day, a minimum wage and similar
proposals.
hi 18!0 Fess married Eva C,
Thomas of ItushvIIIe, O. Three
sons were born to them. Mrs.
Fess died in December, 3925.
Fess was a member of the Metho
dist Episcopal church and a 33nl
degree Mason,
Class Books Written

tor, Fess turned out a number q!
hooks, chieflv for class mam use.
The list included "An OiHftno T
United States History. "Ou'UnfeS
of Physiology," "American Politi
cal Theory" and 'Civics in Ohio,'
He was editor of "World Ev.mti'
from 1903 to 1906,
In the national howse he ary-ed-
for seven years,- as a .-memHCjt
of the committee on insular af.'jlrav
He was named hv President Wil
son on the cnmmiitfto which creat
ed tho federal board for vocation

petus to organization of Ihe v
erans bureau and drew up tW
American I-egion bill ,s providing
training for men not disabled. He
