Lessons In Mystifying Hindu
Magic Are Started By Wizardo
"T"HE Mystery of the Hindu
I Bands" and "The X-Ray
Thimbles" are the two mystifying
secrets in store for Wizardo
Magic club members in today's
lesson number one.
Both of these clever stunts
were performed for me by a Hin
du mystic on a street corner in
Bombay, India! Nearly everyone
has heard of the famous "Hindu
Rope Trick" and the amazing
miracles performed by Hindu
mystics and it was in the hope of
learning some of their treasured
secrets that I visited Bombay. My
quest was not unrewarded. Walk
ing through the streets one eve- '
ning, an ancient Hindu pulled me
aside and, for a slight fee, ex
plained the tricks in our lesson
today.
Jn teaching you magic I will
follow this plan: First I will ex
plain the "EFFECT" or how the
trick will appear to your audi
ence. Second, the "APPARATUS"
or the materials you will need to
make and perform the trick and,
third, the "SECRET" written in
our secret code so that only club
members can find out how it's
done. Is that clear? O. K., here
we go!
EFFECT: Magician displays
three large bands of paper, about
two inches wide and four feet
around. Taking a pair of scissors,
he remarks (the magicians' "pat
ter," or what you are to say while
performing each trick, will al
ways be printed in blackface
type) :
"If 1 were to set a doughnut on
end and slice it in half I would
have two doughnuts. If I cut this
band of paper around through the
center, I will make two bands.
Wouldn't it be nice if they made
dollar bills in circles like these
bands and we could all double our
wealth?"
AS YOU say this, insert scis
sors in the center of one band
and cut around it through the
middle. When you finish, the band
will separate into two separate
bands. (See figure 1.)
The magician now takes a sec
ond band and cuts it in the same
manner, saying:
"In India, however, the natives
have great respect for the old
saying, 'A chain is as strong as
its weakest link so when they cut
their bands they work a little
'Hindu magic and join them to
gether!" As you say this finish cutting
the second band and to the sur
prise of your audience, instead of
falling apart in two -:parate
bands as in the first case, they
are mysteriously linked together.'

Now pick up the third band and
as you begin to cut it say:
"Of course they aren't very
modern in India, and some of the
natives have never seen a chain
bo aa they cut their bands they
work a little 'rope magic' instead
of 'chain magic and nine times
out of ten this is what happens!"
Finish cutting the third band
and it falls apart forming one
large circle. (See figure 3.)
As you finish cutting each band.
. nass it out among your audience
for examination and try as they
will, thev will be unable to solve
this baffling mvstery.
APPARATUS: All vou need for
the prenaration of this trick is a
long sheet of wraoping naper,
about four feet in length. Tf you
haven't any wrapping paner handy
right now, use a niece of news
paper to practice the trick with.
Now get a pair of scissors, some
clue, your secret code and here's
the secret of the "Hindu Bands,1
SECRET: If you use newft

I suggest that you paste two
sheets toother so as to make the
bands at least four feet in cir
cumference. The larger the bands.
th better the trick looks.
Now, lay the naper flat on your
table and cut three strins about

You wiH now see why it is bet
ter to have the bands as long as
possible. If the bands are about
four feet in length it is almost
impossible for vour audience

Magicians, performing this
trick on the stage, make the bandB
out of cloth, which is, I believe,
the best method of working this
trick.
When you arrange your bands
on the table before performing
the trick, be sure to place them in
the proper order in which you will
use them for the trick.
Now for trick number two,
"The X-Ray Thimbles."
EFFECT: Magician displays
five ordinary thimbles. Four of
these thimbles are the same size
and large enough totfit over the
fifth thimble. Placing the thimbles
on a table, the magician explains
that these thimbles are made out
of "magic metal" and that it is
possible for all magicians to see
through them. To prove this, he
requests, that while his back is
turned, some member of the audi-
ence hide the small thimble under
neath anyone of the four large
thimbles. When this has been
done, the magician turns to the
table and without touching the
thimbles immediately points out
the one covering the small
thimble. This trick can be repeat
ed several times without fear of
detection.
APPARATUS: Five ordinary
thimbles is all you need to pre
pare this clever stunt. If you
haven't these thimbles at home,
go to the dime store and pur
chase four large size and one
very small thimble.
That's all you need and here's

When appetites lag, because of warm weather, cold meats are palatable and afford a welcome let
down in kitchen tasks.
Summer Kitchen Problems Eased
With Use of Assorted Cold Plates
TO THE wife and mother in the
home, hot weather presents
many problems. It is too hot to
stay in the kitchen and cook and
yet the family must be fed.
Meal planning is more difficult
in the summer, because appetites
lag a little and the family is a
little harder to please. If we are
wise we will cut our working time
in the kitchen in the summer
months to a minimum and we can
easily do this, if we will get ac
quainted with and use "ready-to-eat"
meats.
Science and thought have put
on the market for us today many
little cans and packages that eon
tain good wholesome ready pre
pared meats. Many of us house-
wives have formed the habit of
thinking of these small packages
and cans of meat as suitable only
for picnics and midnight suppers.
There are decided advantages
in buying these ready prepared
meats. They come to us free of
excess fat, the bone and gristle
removed. There is a big variety
of these meats from which to
choose; there is corn beef, as well
as corn hash, sliced dried beef,
hamburger steak, tripe, roast
beef, luncheon beef, boneless
chicken, cooked brains, sliced
smoked beef, veal loaf, beef loaf,
ham loaf, ehil! eon carne, lamb
tongue, Mexican style tamales,
potted ham, potted tongue, potted
chicken, deviled tongue, ox tongue
and Vienna style sausage. There
are numerous and unusual ways
to serve these meats. Each and

combined with other foods to
make an appetizing dish.
During the summer months, the
house-wife should prepare as
many one-dish meals as possible.
The idea of the one-dish meal is
to prepare and serve in ne dish
a food that makes a complete
meal. This means combining the
meat and vegetables in one dish.
This saves much dish washing.
The ready-to-eat meats lend
themselves beautifully to one-dish
meals. Scalloped veal loaf is as
delicious a meat dish as one could
desire. To prepare this, butter a
baking dish. Cover the bottom of
the dish with a layer of cooked
spaghetti. Dice the contents of a
can of veal loaf and make a layer
of it, then top with another layer
of spaghetti Sprinkle one-half
cup diced cheese over the top and
moisten with a ean of tomato
soup. Bake 20 minutes in a mod
erate oven.
Dried beef prepared encasserole
with hard cooked eggs and a thin
white sauce Is something that wsil
piease the whole family.
Apples stuffed with Vienna
sausage and baked until tender is
something new. Try stuffing
green peppers and tomatoes with
Vienna sausage or corned beef for
a change, Co.'n beef made into
patties and served with a hot
meat sauce is good.
Baked potatoes with veal loaf

ished with radishes or celery, it
cannot fall to evoke praise from
the entire family.

wise. Cutting in this manner
gives a daintier and more appe
tizing appearance.
The first time you are in a res
taurant, or in a hotel, teii the

lightful array of the various pre
pared meats with their garnishes.
The platter will be garnished
with olives, curled celery, thin
slices of pickles and lying on the
lettuce leaves you will see slices
of potted tongue, jellied tongue
boneless chicken, ham loaf, veal
loaf, roast beef and summer saus
age. The very sight of these at
tractive cool-looking meats with
their green garnishes will arouse
your appetite.
