the American Let ion Monthly.
Merchants and retail em through
out the country will receive a total
payment of $623,615,713.86 from 1,
897,836 veterans on depresiion-in-curred
debts and bills. This sum
represents 31.363 per cent of the
total bonus payment. The survey
shows that 53. if 4 per cent of the
veterans receiving payment will
upply at least part of the amount
on settleuieut of , their old ac
counts. The study of expenditure of
bonus money was made by The
American Legion Monthly. It sent,
25 questionnaires to each of the'
more than 11,000 posts of the j
American Legion where they were;
passed out at random to members
who filled the mout. The envelopes
returning the questionnaires were
turned over unopened to George S.
Olive and Co., certified public ac
countants of Indianapolis, by whom
the questionnaires were counted,
audited and projected. The audi-j
tors projected the percentages to
the total number of certificates :
outstanding to determine the value
of expenditure for each Item sped-,
fled. j
Keturns were received from
every state lu the union In approxi
mate proportion to the membership
of the Legion In such state.
In the survey the auditors found
the average amount to be received
by members of the American Le
gion was 1637.77. -

The survey reveals that 4.56 per
cent of the veterans will build new
houseB on which they will make
