American Legion
Auxiliary Activities
By Mra. Waller Fisher
Our motto: We honor the dead
by serving the living.
Most colurrul oi auxiliary events
of the week was the auxiliary and
legion "Rid" paity held Tuesday
evening in the chapter rooms at
the armory. The chapter ball was
transformed into a temporary
school room, presided over by E.
A. Britlon, schoolmaster. Britt's
bald bead, goatee, frock coat,
white doublet and wing collar com
pleted a perfect characterization.
By means of a crooked cane he
nabbed recalcitrant pupils and
put them in their places. While
there was much dialogue of an ex
temporaneous nature, there. waB a
lot of prepared repartee that sav
ored of a rollicking end man show.
Emily Judd was a typical Sis
Hopkins, most elegantly done out
in a pink taffeta frock, knee
length, and a huge ' pink how,
which was now on the top ot her
head and again over her eyebrow.
Sula Parkinson, in a gingham pin
afore, sat on the front row, and
nearby was "Tommy" Dillard,
with short pants, bare knees, a
white blouse with Buster Brown
collar and flowing tie. "Tommy,"
all of a fifth grader, the despair of
the girls In the third grade. Vying
with Tommy for feminine favors
was Ted Post, the typical French
BCbool boy in knee length smoek'
and jaunty beret. Dorothy Gorthy
looked all i 15 in her red pleated
skirt and hair bow to match. Mary
Jo Parkinson, matriarch of them
all in appearance and behavior,
delighted the "kids" with a tap
dance, Berl Bates, legion commands
er, and nian-about-town, at the
piano shiverlngly so with
bare knees and an Icy night without
and within. Cecil Black, person
ality actor de luxe, was induced
to sing . Treasure Island but he
was quickly drowned out by the
combined chorusing voices of the
other pupils. Dick Preston and
Paul RlttenhoUBe, dignified and
aloof, represented the school
board.' Ward Cummlngs came in
for a lot of complaint from the
Various class members because his
mamma had dressed him up in
men's clothes. Just as the fun was
at its height Peg Young and Bess
Reigal, demure twins of about 12
or so, came in bearing a resplen
dent cake of huge proportions
which was presented to President
Sula Parkinson, who was celebrat
ing ber birthday.
At the close of the daily classes
there was a spelling match, the
boys being pitted against tho girls,
the latter naturally eliminating
the former in short order. Finally
there was food, each auxiliary
member having prepared a box
which was drawn hy lot by some
legion "feller." We noticed all of
the men casting covetous glances
in the direction of the large wood
en candy bucket which Peggy
Young had brought. Ou the outside
of the bucket was inscribed: De.
jeuner pour 8 chevaUx et 4U
homines. Mrs. Velle Broad'.vay, as
sisted by Mrs. Walter Fisher, serv
ed the diners with hot coffee. Tak
en all in all. It was a fine large
evening, with enough side splitting
events to last one Until the next
affair In l'J36.
This is the time or year when
it would he interesting for the
people of Roseburg to visit the
child welfare center in the Medi
cal Arts building. "!iere Mrs.
George Caskey and Mrs. George
Mcflce are busily organizing
Christmas baskets which uill bo
distributed among families ot
needy veteruus next week. Thero
will be several dozen of such bas
kets delivered this year. They will
be filled not only with essential
food stuffs but there will bo a bag
of candy. fruit, nuts and toys,
where there are children, in each
basket. Practically all of the con
tents of the baskets have been do
noted by the local auxiliary and
legion as well as by other Units
in this district. Eugene sent 37
pairs of the finest of children's
hose.
Although a charter member of
I'mpqua unit, must admit that
Iho breadth anil slope of auxil
iary service is a source of con
stant amazement to us. Wo learn-
ei tonay mat Mrs. Iivlnn Reigal,
hospital chairman, has been busy
for several months contaciiug
units and post9 who liavo disabled
men in the local veterans facility.
Those parent posts and units in
turn look- up the families of tho
veteran In the hosnltnl at Rose
burg and sec that the ChrWinas
cheer Is taken to them. Mrs. lteigal
has tiunmiinirated with posts as
distant as Louisiana and Honolulu.
In addition to this, veterans who
receive no money ut all, and their
name la legion, arc given Christ
mas cards to send to all members
of their families.
Mrs. Parkinson, nur president,
urges lhat all applicant eligible
for Initiation In Umiiqua unit re
member that January 7 will b
official Initiation night and It Is
hoped lhat all who have not pre
viously been initiated will be
present that evening.
Soon after tho first of the year
