.'Murder at Eagle's Nest'
By WINIFRED VAN DUZER
CHAPTER XLVII.
"How would 1 know?" Bob r
plied irritably. "A woman, lu a
while dress. That's how I saw her
. the white dress lor ihe
was half way acruss the mounds
and it was dark. Seemed to be
sneak Ins kIoiik. 1 stood there and
I saw her sneak up to the back
of the summer house as if she was
watehlnK someone. There's vines
or somethliiK. and they almost hid
her. Hut she came out and went
around lo the other side; I saw
her while dress on the other side
of the house. Then she yelled wine
thing, it sounded like, 'Thai's
enough,' and 1 heard a shot."
"Sure it was a shot?"
"Ouxht to he; I've heard il-nty
of shooting."
''What' did she do then?"
"1 don't know. I didn't see her
again. I ran across the lawn un.l
she was gone. J looked inside and
saw the woman on the floor."
There was a long pause, broken
only by Mllllcenl's sobbing, while
the sick eyes stared al ihem all.
"1 was going to call someone,"
Dob 'Trent went on at lenglh.
"IJon't know why 1 didn't. Guess
I must have been out ot my Head.
What I did was come up here ami
grab a sheet out of the bundle of
laundry on the porch. 1 took it
back and covered her np. Then I
got the car turned around anil
came home. That's all."
The too bright eyes closed; he
seemed to lapse into stupor.
A tier a time the others went n
to the little room and Mllllcent
wept out an apology for purloining
the cigarette lighter.
"You see, 1 was afraid to have
Bob tell. 1 I didn't mean to
harm Ted Pros I truly 1 didn't!
Duly I thought it would give them
something to think about till
they'd found the right one. Oh,
what will become of us?"
Walter tried to reassure her bill
his voice sounded flat. And all at
once Win knew that Wulior did
not quite believe lloh Trent's story
and that Reynolds did not believe
II at nlll Hhe knew It was Ihls
an underlying suspicion of Hob
Trent In Waiter's mind which
accounted for bis lack of definite
action, his following fulse clews.
He had been trying lo shield the
sick man, this broken hero they
all loved, hoping something would
turn up to substantiate his faith,
wavering always between that
faith and duty.
She loved Walter for It. It came
to her that this moment of sud
den knowledge had brought her a
first realization of what love ac
tually was.
Jn the Bhadows of the porch she
saw t ied Hurke, and knew all too
. well what his presence meant.
imogene was waiting at the sla
Hon house. A white and shaking
Imogene, though her Hps were
pulled into a mini, malicious smile.
Mini did not know why she hail
followed Ihe officers hack since
It was plain Waller did not wish
lier'lo, but now she was glad she
ad come. Hhe w as hoping against
hopa that something would hap
pen before tomorrow, morning;
something . which would save lloh
front the arrest that Walter would
lie able no longer to delay.
Hhe saw Waller give Ihe girl a
nod and watrhed Imogene attempt
one ,of her flirtatious glances ul
iiim and Reynolds.
"I auppone you've remembered
something else?" Walter asked
dryly.
"Anybody can forget things."
"If they try hard enough. Had
memory gets people Into trouble
young lady."
"Jlut you wouldn't let me get
Into trouble, would you, Mr.

"All right, Imogen; hurry on."
The girl drew a breath and Dim
saw the look of malice twist iutosk
her lace again. She wailed a mo
ment and then Hpoke with drama
tic clearni'KH.
" know who Ihe man wan the
UaronHHH met In the garden."
"What 7" Waller came to hin
feel. "You knew Uiib and didn't
tell?"
"I'm telllnj? now, ain't I? Oh,
sure, I tuippose you'll make a
racket." Sin Beemed frlKhtent-d
all at once frightened and untune
of heiHelf. Him wondered if she
had acted hastily In coming here
and win heginnliiK to repent. Rea
lizing In no in e k (.range way what
was coming, Him was more inter
ested In Imogene than In what
he meant to Hay.
"I'm Horry," the maid continued
more soberly. "Ouess 1 couldn't
know how you'd feel about It. Any
way, the man didn't have nothing
to do with the murder."
"How do you know that?" Wal
ler snapped.
"Because I seen him go out and
I seen him come In and the mur
der was afterward. Anyway, he
waa in before 12 o'clock. The
man," Imogene stated, "was Mr
Dole." "Ah, the philandering Mr. Dole."
observed Heynodls with elaborate
aarensm.
The sareaRm was lost on Imo
gene but not the Implication, which
aeemed lo Fhrow her Into fury.
"You said III" she sputtered. "It's
Ihls one and that, one with him
and true to nobody, that's what.
We'll see can he go around telling
lies to decent hard-working glrlH."
"Dole has been lying to you,
Imogene?"
"Well, 1 don't care nothing
alinut that, lm through with him.
What I want In Justice done; that's
all." she muttered In a way which
indicated that this was by no
means all she wanted. "Well, Its
like I was telling you before. Mrs.
Hardy sent me out of the dressing
room about eleven thirty and I
went up stairs."
"You said you were asleep In ten
mlnuates, I remember."
"Well, I wasn't I started to
undress and then 1 sat by the win
dow a while not very long. I
guess. I seen the Haroness on the
terrace; she was standing there
like she was waiting for someone.
And 1 seen who It was when W I
Ham came from around by the
kitchen. They began" to talk and
she took hold of his arm and they
went down the path to the summer
house."
"How long were Ihey gone?"
"Not more'n firieeu minutes.
Not him, anyway. He came back
then."
"He cuine hack alone?"
"Oh, mire, Hud enough of her
I giH'Hfl. He went up the kitchen
stair, 1-tuU a while louder and I
was undressed and in bed when I
beard the clock Htrike midnight."
"Hee anyone else in the gar
den?" "No, I didn't," Hhe replied sulk
ily. "I didn't see anyone or any
thing else about tho old murder.
In case you maybe get to thinking
I'm not on the level about Ibis."
They asked her more questions
and finally let her go. And thou
they sent for William Hole and he
was brought in. si 111 self-poH'ssed,
though his eyes. Ilim uollced, were
harrassed.
He admitted the truth of
Imogeiie's story simply, u iih a
sort of fatalistic mini.
"I've been an awful fool," he
said, stepping out of hie butler
character. "That's all, though
just a fool, uot a murderer. When
X think or her lying out there
dead Cod.
"The story goes back a long
time ten years. She wasn't a
HaroneBs thn; she was a dancer,
like myself. We danced together
In 'Helle of liroadway' and I It'll
for her as everybody else was do
ll, only harder. Something about
her to drive one mad. We we
went to Paris. We danced lhre
and In London all around. She
ditched rue when she b'-gan to K't
famous. I well, you couldn't
blame her. I wasn't anybody much
and there was no lint if to where
she could go. Ambitious she uas.
You see?
"1 didn't fall out of lov with
her, though. 1 came back here and
did a little something on my own
But 1 kept remembering. Want
ing to see her aga n. That's hunt
to understand, I guess."
Walter Jii'.'. hf-rfjiv "On cm"
"I read In the pap-i (the w ;i
coming to America coming to
visit Mrs. Hardy. Ho I got a job
as butler since I figured I couldn't
get In any other way. Didn't ex
pect to speak to her, you know. I
just thought . . . Say, It's funny
how things work out; the Illusions
you carry around."
'Illusions?"
The man looked up in surprise
and shook his head. "Why, yet.
When I did see her 1 knew I'd been
kidding myself all these years. I
wasn't in love with her at ail and
hadn't bten for a long while. Don't
understand that even yet. When I
saw tier that night she looked IlUe
Just another woman to me."
"You told her Ihie?"
' "Wi'Il, she wanted to stir up the
old thing, I suppose. Asked me to
meet, her in the garden. That "
he said with a glance at Blm, "
was what the note was about. I
didn't want to go, but I did. We
walked down to the summer house
and sat there a few minutes. She
v, ;ih angry and disappointed. I
left her out there." He shook
hiiiis If a.s one might upon awak-
i niug from a had dream. "1 said
I'd ben a fool."
"You understand," Walter asked
him, "where you're standing now?"
. "Oh I'll not t;y to awaj,
ii thai s what ou mean. I'm will
ing to lake what over's coming lo
in-. I suppose. The price of
tolly."
Him fell sorry for him as he
went away slowly, his head down
Had he told the truth? She would
have said yes. And yet. . . .
It was then that Chief Kury paid
an, unheard of midnight visit to the
station bouse.
