It is one of the great ironies
of life that its greatest conflicts
and battles are not usually fought
out between people who have di
vergent and utterly different!
ideals and philosophies, but be
tween those who have quite simi
lar ones but who seek to realize
them by different methods. Some
of tho most savage controversies
in the regions world, for instance,
have not been between believers
and unbelievers, but between
groups of believers who have be
lieved differently from one anoth
er. And very often the differences
that huve occasioned the conflict
have been In no sense fundamen
tal or important. Even a casual
glance at the history of the Chris
tian church, either in Ifmg-past
centuries or even in our own day
and time, will bring that fact home
to us.
H must be a very serious waste
of thought and energy. If not
something very much worse, when
people with essentially the same
ideals and purposes in life insist
on wot king in conflict Instead of
tu cooperation. Of course, it U
not to be expected that all people
who see certain ends in life as
worthy and worth striving for
should always agree as to the best
means and methods to realise
those ends. It would not be wise
I hat there should always be such
conformity aitd uniformity, even
if it could he expected. Hut the
working at cross purposes so often
seen among groups of people or
among Individuals, who differ uot
in the thinRS aimed at but In the
methods of attaining them, comes
very near to being a great tragedy.
To bring methods and policies to
the bar of reasoned judgment and
Intelligent argument is one thing,
but to make out of the decision
reached a ground of conflict and
antagonism and bitter strife is

of the state forester's office, is in
Roseburg today and will, spend the
following ten days or two weeks
presenting in the various communi
ties of the county, before schools
and civic organizations, an illus
trated lecture which presents in a
graphic way the story oX forests. I
Mr. Fuller will be assisted in tnis
work by I). O. Weaver, local state
forestry official.
This forestry educational cam
paign U sponsored jointly by Uie
Oregon state forester, ths Oregon
rorest Fire association and the
U. S. forest service. It is endors
ed by the state superintendent of
public instruction.- Programs are
put on before granges, schools,
community meetings, civic clubs
and other gatherings.
The purpose of the lectures is
to bring about a better understand
ing of the value and importance
of the forest resources ;.nd indus
tries of the state. Thi; deal con
structively with one ol the out
standing problems confronting the
state of Oregon today, a problem
as vital to the agricultural regions
of eastern Oregon as it is to the
timbered portions of the state. For
est fire prevent is not the whole
story, but Is brought in as an im
portant factor.

while. And it is that attitude that
puts to the test many of the pro
fessions that we jmake. We insist
that we desire almost above any

might be set up in the earth, but

that work of setting it up Is being
done by some other branch of the
Christian church than our own,
and how active and earnest Is our
cooperation in that enterprise?
The way the Christian churches
have not cooperated, heart and
soul, in the doing of the work that
they all have professed to hold
next their hearts, has been the
scandal of long years of Christian
history. And have wo found our
selves not quite so sorry as we
might have been when some great
enterprise has failed, not having
been undertaken in the way that
we thought best? -Is it not true
that though the people who are
working today that justice and
goodness and brotherly love might
be sot up in the earth are having
a difficult time of it and much
opposition. Their greatest hind
rance is fonnd in the fact that so
often in a self-willed way they are
working at cross purposes with
one another and have not yet
learned tho sane hut hard lesson
of cooperation? In very truth I
believe the Kingdom of God waits
our learning that lesson.
