PORTLAND, Jan. 21 A Port
land millionairo and his former

nitely with a joint Indictment for
first degree murder.
Circuit Judge W. A. Ekwall de
nied a defense motion to quasli Hie
indictment against Nelson C.
Bowles and Irma O. Loucks, ac
cused of the knife murder of
Bowies' wife.
Although it lost its battle to
hare the indictment quashed, the
defense won a partial victory,
Bowles and Miss Loucks were in
dicted jointly and separately and
when arguments on tlie defense
motion opened three days ago the

state elected to go to trial on the
joint. indictment and the separate
indictments were dismissed.
Mrs. H. W. Howard, Important
state's witness in the case, was

POEM FOR THE DAY
By LOUIS ALBERT BANKS
THE PASSING SHOW
Recall the fleeting things that pass,
That bulk so largely in the mass;
And now that they are gone and passed,
How quick they vanish in the vast!
That jolly, playful pantomime
That seemed to be such waste of time,
Now looms as large in memory green
As does a coronation scene.
That speech that woke a nation's cheers.
And stirred the opposition's fears,
Which waited a senate's loud acclaim.
And proudly spread that bubble, fame,
Takes place beside a driftwood fire,
Or when we joined the country choir;
And all seem trifles in the chain
They count but little in life's gain.
The day we won a case in court
That had the judge's high report,
And woke to praise the country-side,
And stimulated all our pride,
Is in bur memory but a nnme
Like chess men in an idle game.
When once' these things have come to pass,
They wither like the new-mown grass.
There are some things th.it still abide
That live and flourish in their pride:
They are the souls we learned lo love,
ul'hal link J us wilh the life above ;
Unselfish service that we gave
Some careless wandering soul to save.
Such deeds no failing memory bars,
They shine in glory mong the start.
